Soil and Rock Description and Material Symbols 1 Media Index Record41 Introduction The following factual report presents the findings of a ground investigation undertaken by Gold Ram Engineering & Development Lid., under the direction of the Engineer, Fugro (HK) Ltd. and on behalf of the client, the works division of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, Civil Engineering Department, Government of Hong Kong, SAR. The contract number is GE/99/15. Feature number is 7SE-B/C134 and work order number 99 15/A/022. Entitled $ of the Peak Area No. 231, Ma On Shan Tsuen, Ma On Shan. The Work Order period was from 25/5/2000 to 17/8/2000. The fieldworks consisted of 6 No. trial pits numbered 32-TP1 to 32-TP6 with one GCO probe in the base of each trial pit numbered 32-P1 (for trial pit 32- TP1) to 32-P2 (for trial pit 32-TP2) and 32-P4 (for trial pit 32-TP4) to 32-P5 (for trial pit 32-TP5) and 3 No. slope strippings numbered 32-SS1 to 32-SS3. The Site ‘The site is located at S of the Peak Area No. 231, Ma On Shan Tsuen, Ma On Shan, approximately en Hong Kong grid co-ordinates 842828E — 842884E and 829256N — 829273N (see Location Plan). Geology According to the 1:20 000 scale geological map published by the Geotechnical Control Office, entitled Hong Kong Geological Survey, Sheet 7 Shatin, Series HGM - 20, Edition 1 — 1986, the site location is underlain by fine grained granite of Jurassic — Cretaceous age. ‘The material encountered in the trial pits and slope strippings consisted of: Topsoil ~ sandy gravelly SILT/CLAY and clayey sandy gravelly SILT. Fill — sandy gravelly SILT/CLAY and COBBLES and BOULDERS. Colluvium — sandy SILT/CLAY with occasional cobbles and clayey sandy gravelly SILT. Decomposed rock ~ Residual Soil of GRANITE and completely decomposed medium grained GRANITE, Competent rock — CORESTONES of slightly to moderately decomposed medium grained GRANITE. Fieldwork Trial Pits42 43 43.1 44 45 4.6 A total of 6 No. trial pits were excavated, namely 32-TP1 to 32-TP6. Trial pits were logged and photographs were taken prior to backfilling. Samples were taken in trial pits in accordance with the Engineers instruction. Small disturbed samples were taken at 0.50m intervals and U100 vertical undisturbed samples generally taken at 1.00m intervals, where possible. A summary of sampling and testing is presented in Table 1, and the logs presented in, Appendix I. Slope Stripping 3.No. slope strippings were carried out, namely 32-SS1 to 32-SS3. Small disturbed samples were taken at 0.50m interval. The slope strippings were logged prior to reinstatement. The logs are presented in Appendix II. In Situ Field Testing GCO Probes 3 No. GCO probe tests were performed prior to trial pit excavation and following backfilling, for each trial pit. A total of 4 No. GCO probe tests were performed in the bottom of trial pits 32-TP1 (GCO probe No. 32-P1), 32-TP2 (GCO probe No. 32-P2), 32-TP4 (GCO probe No. 32-P4) and 32-TPS (GCO probe No. 32-P5). The results of the GCO probe test at the bottom of trial pits are included in this report. Details are given in GCO probes records Appendix Ill and in Table 1. Photographs Photographs were taken for all faces and bottom of each trial pit. The photographs are presented in Appendix IV. Sample Description The description of soil and rock, and decomposition terms and grades used in this report are in accordance with GEOGUIDE 3 - Guide to Rock and Soil Description (GCO, 1994). A summary of the description system is presented in Appendix V. Digital Records Both the preliminary and final logs have been produced by using gINT.
