 Construction Methodology for Construction of Coffer Dam

Introduction
Intake Works is part of Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme K‐IV located at Kinjhar lake near
Thatta. The work comprises of Intake Structure, Five cell Conduit, Common Inlet Chambers and Main
and Guide Embankments. All these works require construction of temporary cofferdam to ward off
lake water from the locations of these structures so that construction activity can take place in desired
conditions.

Levels
The selected location for cofferdam has been marked on the drawing (Cofferdam – Sketch#02).
Minimum lake bed level at this alignment is 13.15m. Full Supply level of the Lake is 17.5m. At present
the water level is around 16.0m. The cofferdam is designed to give free board of 1.5m (Top Level of
19.0m). 5m Top width is planned to allow equipment to ply on the embankment.

Construction
The course fill material from nearby borrow shall be laid up to above existing water level by
successively dumping material. It shall be done so that some part of width at this level is not achieved.

This left out place shall be filled by drain material of 500mm thickness. After spreading this material
to desired thickness and width, further fill material shall be dumped to complete the width at this
level.

A trench shall be made in the center of this fill by excavator. A jackhammer shall be employed to
extend this trench 200mm below rock. The trench shall be filled with clay material in succession to the
excavation.

After the trench is excavated and filled by clay material, further clay material shall be laid in layers
along with coarse fill material.

When the embankment reaches its desired top level rocks shall be laid on the U/S slope.

De‐watering shall be carried out on the D/S side and toe drain shall be excavated.
