The ICAR- National Academy of Agricultural Research
Management (NAARM), Hyderabad announces an online
training programme on Next Generation Sequencing Data
Analysis from 16-20 October, 2023 at Hyderabad.
Background
Next-generation sequencing (NGS), also known as high-
throughput sequencing has changed the study of genomics and
molecular biology by enabling DNA and RNA to be produced
more cheaply, quickly, and without creating as much cost as
conventional technologies. NGS technology has enabled the
study of genetic variations associated with diseases or other
biological phenomena in a convenient manner. Introduced for
commercial use in 2005, this method was initially called
“massively-parallel sequencing”, because it enabled the
sequencing of many DNA strands at the same time, instead of
one at a time as with traditional Sanger sequencing by capillary
electrophoresis (CE). Advancement in sequencing has also
transformed the enhancement strategies in agriculture. The
introduction of new platforms employing long-read
sequencing ensured more efficient sequencing of large and
complex genomes. NGS has replaced the traditional methods
of genotyping and plant breeding and simplified the genetic
enhancement and modification approaches with the
availability of diverse genetic variants information. NGS has
impacted agricultural genomics by introducing transcriptome
sequencing, genome resequencing, targeted sequencing, and
genotyping by sequencing methodologies. Whole-genome
sequencing and genome resequencing provide information on
structural variations present within or between the crop
species, which is useful in uncovering the population diversity.
Transcriptome sequencing and epigenetic analysis are valuable
tools for studying the gene expression in a specific
environmental condition impacting crop yield or responsible
for a particular trait. Variants such as SNPs, CNVs, and markers
that are associated with a particular phenotypic effect can be
identified by sequencing. In addition, genotyping by
sequencing enables the genotyping of multiple genomes in the
absence of reference genomes. NGS also play role in various
stages of genome editing using CRISPR technology. Whole-
genome sequencing is utilized for analyzing CRISPR off-target
effects and also CRISPR knockouts and other edits are verified
by targeted sequencing. NGS technologies play a crucial role in
the innovations in the agricultural field and provide the
information and better understanding for regulation and
enhancing the performance of the crop to meet the global
demand.
This training programme would focus on upgrading the
computational skills of agricultural scientists by providing
exposure to transforming NGS technologies and data analysis.
Objectives
· To train the scientists in the area of NGS data analysis by
providing lectures as well as hands on approach to various
software utilized for NGS data analysis.
· To provide basic understanding of NGS by domain experts
that will upgrade the knowledge and skills of agricultural
professionals.

How to Apply?
Applicants are advised to fill nomination form online after
registration on Training Management Information System
(https://naarm.org.in/training). Upload filled, signed and
scanned nomination form onto Training Management
Information System or mail it to Training Unit, NAARM
(trainingunit@naarm.org.in).
On-line Training
The programme will be offered through on-line only. The
selected participants will receive Microsoft Teams meeting
invitation on their email. All the participants require a
laptop/Desktop with good internet connectivity and access to
good quality headphones with microphones. The
participation on all sessions will be mandatory. The classes
will be held on all days for about 3 -4 hours daily in two
sessions (Morning and afternoon). The participants will be
provided with hands-on exercises for practice. A mock
session will be held one or two days prior to start of the
training programme. Certificates will be issued to
participants based on their attendance in all sessions and
active participations during the programme.
