Program Overview

Confucius Institute Scholarship (2017):

Professional Development Program for Chinese Language

Teachers in South Asian Countries

For the purpose of deepening cultural exchanges between China and South
Asian countries and promoting the localization of Chinese language
teachers, Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) (hereinafter referred
to as “Hanban”) has launched the “Confucius Institute Scholarship:
Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in
South Asian Countries”.

1. Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other


Languages(MTCSOL)

To be eligible for the program, an applicant shall:


 Be a non-Chinese citizen aged below 35;
 Hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent;
 Achieve the minimum score of 180 in HSK (Level 5) and 60 in HSKK
(Intermediate Level);
 Sign an agreement with Hanban; preference will be given to applicants
with a specific teaching position (agreement or proof by the institution
where he/she will teach upon graduation is required); and,
 Meet other conditions as required by the host institution.

Duration of scholarship: two academic years

Award benefits:
 Tuition waiver;
 Free on-campus accommodation;
 A monthly living allowance of 3,000 RMB; and,
 One economy class round-trip airfare for the shortest distance between
the recipient’s home city and the host institution in China per academic
year.

2. Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other
Languages (BTCSOL)/ 1-year Foundation Chinese Language + 4-year
BTCSOL Program (“1+4 Program”)

To be eligible for the program, an applicant shall:


 Be a non-Chinese citizen aged below 25;
 Hold a high school certificate or above;
 Achieve the minimum score of 180 in HSK (Level 3) and 60 in HSKK
(Intermediate Level)*;
 Sign an agreement with Hanban; and,
 Meet other conditions as required by the host institution.
* Applicable to BTCSOL applicants

Duration of scholarship: four academic years for BTCSOL applicants; five


academic years for 1+4 Program applicants

Award benefits:
 Tuition waiver;
 Free on-campus accommodation;
 A monthly living allowance of 2,500 RMB; and
 One economy class round-trip airfare for the shortest distance between
the recipient’s home city and the host institution in China per academic
year.

3. Intensive Chinese Language Training (One Academic Year/ One


Semester)
To be eligible for the program, an applicant shall:
 Be a non-Chinese citizen;
 Be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Chinese or related
disciplines;
 Have no prior experience of studying in China;
 Achieve the minimum score of 180 in HSK (Level 3) and 60 in HSKK
(Beginner Level)*; the minimum score of 120 in HSK (Level 2) and 60
in HSKK (Beginner Level)**; and,
 Meet other conditions as required by the host institution.
* Applicable to One-Academic-Year Program applicants
** Applicable to One-Semester Program applicants

Duration of scholarship: 11 months for One-Academic-Year Program


applicants; five months for One-Semester Program applicants

Award benefits:
 Tuition waiver;
 Free on-campus accommodation; and
 A monthly living allowance of 2,500 RMB.
