Lesson 01 : 1-WH-questions and Yes/No Questions

2-Possessive adjectives , subject pronouns and greetings

There are two main types of questions in English: WH-questions and Yes/No questions.

1- WH- Questions

WH-questions are questions starting with WH-words including: what, when, where, who, whom,
which, whose, why and how. Question words are used to ask about specific qualities, times, place,
people and so on. Below is a list of question words and example sentences:

➢ How to form WH-questions?

1- with an auxiliary

a- Wh-word + auxiliary + subject + main verb …?

Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs (not main verbs). Common auxiliary verbs include be, do, have.
Others are will, shall, would, can, could, must, should, may, might, etc.

What do you do for a living?

Why should we read novels?

When is she coming?

a-without any auxiliary

(when WH-words replace subjects already)

Wh-word + main verb …?


What happened to Susan?

- A bad accident happened to her today.

Who won the game?

-David won the game.

Who gave you this book?

-My cousin gave me this book.

2- Yes/No Questions

Yes/ No questions are also called closed questions because there are only two possible responses:
Yes or No. When forming a Yes / No question, it must include one of these verbs: BE, DO, HAVE, or
modal verbs (must – should – can – could …). It is impossible to ask a Yes / No question without one
of these verbs.

➢ Using your own words ,write 6 Yes/No Questions .

Activity two:

➢ Write a small paragraph where you will introduce yourself or someone to your classmates.
➢ Make a conversation with your partner where you are going to exchange personal
information or talk about a life experience.

Note: Do not forget to start with greetings . Use possessive adjectives and subject pronouns with
both topics.

Possessive adjectives: my , your ,his ,hers ,ours ,theirs.

Subject pronouns: I ,you ,she, he ,it ,we ,they.
