 About the Department

Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 2000 under the umbrella
of Medi-Caps Institute of Technology and Management and was subsequently shifted to
Medi-Caps University upon it's establishment in the year 2016. During this journey of more
than two decades, the department has credited several achievements, especially in the field of
academics and research. The curriculum designed for various programs offered by the
department reflects as appropriate composition of classical and current aspects of technology.
The department is committed to providing contemporary and state of art laboratories to
students to ensure impeccable project and research work. Graduates of the department have
got their research and project work published in several renowned conferences.

motivated towards innovation, entrepreneurship and research in mechanical and allied

Unit-I: Materials & Mechanical Measurement


Classification of Engineering material and their mechanical properties, Composition of cast iron and
carbon steels and their application, stress-strain diagram, Hooks law and modulus of elasticity.
Tensile, shear, hardness, and fatigue testing of materials.
Unit-II: Thermodynamics
Thermodynamic properties and systems, First and second law of thermodynamics, thermal processes
at constant pressure, volume, enthalpy & entropy, heat engine, heat pump, refrigerator and their
numerical.
Unit-III: I.C. Engines
Description and working of four stroke petrol engines, two stroke petrol engines, four stroke diesel
engines and two stroke diesel engines, and its efficiency relative merits and demerits.
Unit-IV: Steam generators
Definition, Classification, general study of Cochran, Lancashire and Locomotive boilers, boilers
mountings and accessories.
Steam properties and boiler performance. Draught Classification, Calculation of Chimney height,
boiler efficiency and numerical.
Unit V: Centroid & Moment of Inertia
Location of centroid and moment of inertia of plane areas, perpendicular axis and parallel axis
theorem.

Course Outcomes (COs):


After completion of this course the students shall be able to:
CO01 Analyze the engineering materials, their properties, and evaluate properties of
materials by selecting different measuring instruments and testing machines.
CO02 Apply the basic laws of thermodynamics and their applications in engineering,
refrigeration cycles and properties of refrigerants.
CO03 Compare different types I.C. engine.
CO04 Select different types of boilers used in steam power plants by evaluating boiler
performance.
CO05 Evaluate centroid & moment of inertia of areas/composite sections by using parallel
and perpendicular axes theorems.

4. Tensile Testing of standard mild steel specimen on UTM.
5. Study of 2-stroke petrol and diesel engine.

9. To find the centroid of different plane laminas and to calculate their moment of inertia
about different axis.
10. Measurement of Hardness number using Brinell hardness tester.

Evaluation Scheme

Continuous Evaluation Scheme: Continuous evaluation will be carried out on each lab
term which will compose of viva, file writeup and performance in the laboratory.
Each of these components will contribute to finalization of internal marks.

Internal Marks: 40 Marks


File 10 Marks, Conduction & viva 20 Marks, attendance 10 Marks
Scheme of External Examination: 60 Marks
External Exam will be conducted for 60 Marks, out of which 30 will be
for viva and remaining 30 for experiment conduction and writeup.

 General Instructions

 Go through the Instruction manual before start of the experiment.


 Strictly follow the instructions given by the Teacher/ Lab Instructor.
 It is mandatory to come to lab in a formal dress (Shirts, Trousers, ID
card, and Shoes for boys). Strictly no Jeans for both Girls and Boys.
 It is mandatory to come with a workbook and lab record in
which previous experiment should be written.
 Lab record of the present lab experiment should be corrected on the same day.
 Mobile Phones should be Switched OFF in the lab session.
 Students must come to the lab on time. Late comers are not allowed to enter the
lab.
 Prepare for the viva questions. At the end of the experiment, the lab
faculty will ask the viva questions and marks are allotted accordingly.
 Follow all written instructions as mentioned in the manual and then
proceed with the experiment.
 Listen carefully and follow the verbal instructions, if any.
 Put your bags in the lab on defined racks only.
 Switch off the lights, fans, and all the equipment’s used, before leaving
the lab.
 Students will replace/ arrange the chairs to the specific position before
leaving the lab.
 True dedication and devotion are expected from the students while
working in the lab.
