SUBJECT: Piston Ring Compressor

MODELS AFFECTED: VHP Large Bore (9.375 in.) Engines

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform the field

of the release of a new piston ring compressor
kit, P/N A474057B, for installing pistons on VHP
large bore (9.375 in.) engines. Kit P/N A474057B
includes piston ring compressor and case as
shown in Figure 1.

The new compressor tool design is taller, has a

larger opening at the mouth and larger bore to
accommodate Series 5 piston assemblies (see
Figure 2).
The new piston ring compressor can be used on
both current and previous VHP large bore
2 engines.
The tool features locating lugs and has

PREFERRED METHOD
Place the piston ring compressor on the
firedeck, locating it on the two dowel pins that
straddle the cylinder. Be sure the word “Cam”
faces towards the camshaft.
Using a suitable lifting device and the aid of an
assistant(s), slowly lower the piston and
connecting rod assembly through the piston
ring compressor and into the cylinder bore.
Once the piston is within the piston ring
compressor, push the piston through the
compressor and into the cylinder bore (see
Figure 4).

ALTERNATE METHOD
Position the piston within the piston ring
compressor. Orient the piston within the
compressor so that the word “Cam” faces the
camshaft.
NOTE: Refer to the current Repair & Overhaul
Manual for cautions and weight concerns to
define a suitable lift device.
Using a suitable lifting device and the aid of an
assistant(s), slowly lower the piston and
connecting rod assembly into the cylinder bore.
As the compressor tool nears the firedeck, align
the piston ring compressor with the two dowel
pins.
Once the compressor is installed on the dowel
pins and against the firedeck, push the piston
through the compressor and into the cylinder
bore (see Figure 5).
