ORMO 2023 Problems

Problem 1. Andy is preparing for a Fortnite tournament, exactly 10 weeks after the cur-
rent day. To make sure he is prepared, Andy plays at least one round of Battle Royale every
day. However, to ensure that he does not burn out, he decides not to play any more than
25 rounds of Battle Royale every fortnight. Prove that there exists a streak of successive
days where Andy plays exactly 14 rounds of Fortnite Battle Royale.

Problem 2. Suddenly, Andy realises that the big Fortnite tournament was using a different
map. In order to maximise his chances of winning, Andy needs to analyse the map and find
optimal strategies.
Andy sees that he could define the map with two circles C1 and C2 intersecting at two distinct
points P and Q. A line through P meets the circles C1 and C2 in A and B, respectively.
Let Y be the midpoint of AB and suppose QY meets the circles C1 and C2 in X and Z,
respectively.
Andy wants to land at a point where X and Z are equally as far. Would that be true if Andy
lands at Y ?

Problem 3. After losing in the Fortnite tournament, Andy realises that Fortnite was too
complex a game, and he needs to play a game where the result is able to be completely de-
termined by the laws of math.
Ben challenges Andy to a number game he invented. n coins are placed on a table. Ben
goes first, and he removes at least one, but not all of the coins. Then, the two take turns,
but never taking more than what was taken on the previous move. The player who takes the
last coin wins.
After his defeat in the Fortnite tournament, Andy does not want to lose again. Knowing
that Ben is playing some combinatorial trick, Andy calculates that the value of n Ben chose
meant that he had no winning strategy. What values of n could Ben have chosen?

Problem 4. Andy’s amazing skill at numbers leads him into the study of number theory.
A special type of number is a square number, and it has many interesting properties.
The positive integers a and b are such that 15a + 16b and 16a − 15b are both squares of
positive integers. What is the smallest possible value of the smaller of the two squares?

Problem 5. Of course, Andy’s beliefs have flaws, one of which is that they perpetrate in-
equality and discrimination. In his hatred for inequalities that have equality cases, Andy
wrote this problem:
Consider numbers a2 a3 · · · an = 1. Prove that when n > 3, then

(a2 + 1)2 (a3 + 1)3 · · · (an + 1)n > nn .

Problem 6. Andy’s quest for success leads him towards being a sigma. Interestingly,
sigma also represents a function in number theory that is the sum of all divisors of a num-
ber. Andy decides to search through a special number with special sigma properties. Andy
notices that all these numbers follow a certain form.
Prove that if n is a positive integer such that σ(n) = 2n + 1, then n is the square of an odd
integer.
