ENG 2010
For Project #1: Narrative Profile, I made specific goals to give the reader stakes into my
profile and to help them better connect to my writing. I tried to think outside of the box and start
from the beginning of my issue and retrace where the issue started and walk the reader through
how the issue came about to better interest and engage the reader. Another one of my goals for
this project was to utilize and stay consistent with the first-person writing point of view. As I was
reading other narrative profiles, I felt this writing style was more connective and impressionable
to me as the reader, and I wanted my audience to be connected to my piece. The idea to give
more background information and detail came to me by doing the in-class workshop with my
group. I was given the idea to include more detail in specific areas, and less in other aspects to
keep my topic relevant. Another good insight I received from my group members in the writers
workshop was to avoid repeating certain descriptive words to seem less repetitive and more
captivating to the reader. Overall, I was able to receive ample feedback that helped me improve
my narrative.
If I were to further edit this piece, I would include less background on my experience as a
child, and more information on the event itself and how it persuaded me to further research this
topic. It was good to do this narrative first before further research, because I was able to better
connect to the issue and it made it seem more real to me. This was a method I’ve never done
before when researching local issues, but I really enjoyed it and benefited from it when doing my
research.
