Subject: Invitation for NUST Olympiad Debates Open

Respected Sir/Madam,

NUST Debating Society feels immense pleasure to invite you to the NUST
Olympiad Debates Open which includes a bilingual British Parliamentary
Debate Format.
The NUST Debating Society (NDS) fosters a vibrant place for eloquence and
intellectual exchange, serving as a beacon of intellectual curiosity and critical
thinking. NDS provides an opportunity for passionate speakers to showcase
their talents and engage in thought-provoking debates on a variety of themes.
At ODO, NDS promises to provide a platform for individuals to improve their
public speaking skills while also fostering an environment of open-
mindedness and courteous discourse. NDS is dedicated to promoting
inclusivity and making sure that every voice is heard, fostering an
environment in which varied ideas can thrive.
The event dates are from 29th February- 3rd March.

Olympiad Debates Open


ODO 24'
ODO is a sub-competition under Olympiad 24 organized by Student Affairs. It is a two-day
event, featuring two preliminary rounds on the first day and the semi-finals and finals on the
second day.
Team registration status will be confirmed upon receipt of the Olympiad and ODO
registration fee.
Each of the Urdu and English categories will have a cap of 16. The event will commence with
two preliminary rounds, followed by the announcement of team breaks to the Semi-Finals.
Allotments will follow a first-come, first-served policy.
Each team is required to appoint a team head who will act as the primary liaison with our
team, responsible for providing all necessary team details.
In case of emergencies, immediate communication with Olympiad and NDS management is
mandatory. The decisions of management will be considered final.
Adhering to NUST's punctuality standards, and strict adherence to the schedule is essential.
Participants must arrive at least an hour before ODO’s timings to prevent unnecessary
delays. Late teams will face disqualification.
Participants must carry their CNIC, institute cards, and payment proof.
Failure to comply with event rules may lead to disqualification or penalization.
NUST Code of Conduct applies to the conduct displayed on the University premises, at
NUST-sponsored activities.

All participants are prohibited from engaging in conduct resulting in or leading to,
any of the following

Examples of inappropriate clothing include:

males/females) may qualify as an example of Sexual Harassment by hurting/disrespecting
human feelings and emotions of others;
f. any failing in this regard will lead to disciplinary action based upon the identified penalties
as per NUST Regulations.

Olympiad 2024 ODO 24'


Our event will follow the rules of British Parliamentary debates, where each
team consists of 2 speakers. In the British Parliamentary format, four teams are
competing in a match:

Opening Government Opening Opposition

Closing Government Closing Opposition

The debate takes place with a motion, and two sides are formed, one for and one
against. The motion is announced 15 minutes before the start of the first speech.
Draws/Team Positions are announced just before the release of the motion.
In the British Parliamentary Debate (BP), each team consists of two speakers,
and their roles are defined as follows:

Point of Information (POI)


In the British Parliamentary Debate, the Point of Information (POI) rule allows speakers to
offer concise questions or comments during a 7-minute speech. POIs are permitted after the
1st minute and before the 7th minute, with the 1st and last minute designated as protected
time. POIs must be brief, not exceeding 10 seconds. The speaker chooses to accept or reject
any POI request.

Adjudication Policy
Each match will be judged by a panel of adjudicators. ODO will follow an N-1 policy.

Accommodations are provided to outstation participants on a

on our website.
