 Dilution effect in argument
Have you ever been in a heated discussion and wanted so badly to show the other
person just how wrong they were?If you’re like most of us, you tried to
overwhelm your opponen with sheer quantity, to barrage them with every scrap
of evidence you could think up.As it turns out, pilling on the proof is an unwise
approach, says Niro Sivanathan, a psychology reseacher.That’s because when we
double down on our arguments, we’re setting ourselves up to be undone by the
so-called “dilution effect”.
One example of how this dilution effect has real-word consequences is in drug
advertising. It’s requirement in the US for the side effects of prescription
medications must be listed at the end of TV or radio commercials.But if you
listen, you’ll notice that the commercials never end right after the listing of the
major side effects such as stroke, heart attack or death.Instead, they’ll either end on
minor side effects (such as headaches or itchiness) or on neutral information (such
as telling people to discuss medication with their doctor).The drug manufacturers,
consciously or not, are using the dilution effect – by including so much
information, they end up watering down consumer’s assessments of how risky
the drug actually is.
How can you use these insights to win over people in your own life ? Just stick to
their strongest points; resist the temptation to try beating others with brute force.
“It’s important to note the the delivery of your message is every bit as important as
its content.” Sivanathan says. “You cannot increase the quality of an argument by
simply increasing the quantity of your argument.”

The Chinese authorities have put an entire city into lockdown after the discovery
of just 3 asymptomatic Covid cases. Residents won’t be allowed to leave their
home in Yuzho which has a population of 1.2 million. Transport system has
been shut down as well as shops and entertainment venues. Only food stores can
stay open and only workers involved in epidemic prevention are allowed out.
Another city with a population of 13 million has been under lockdown for two
weeks. Our correspondent Robin Brand has sent us this report.
This is extreme even by China standards. A city shut down because of just three
new cases with no symptoms. Everyone is prohibited from leaving the city, the
sign says a million plus people are now in lockdown in Yuzho – the latest proof
that China is very committed to Zero Covid Strategy.
“It’s doesn’t bother me to do a Covid test at midnight, it’s for our own safety. 300
miles away and 2 weeks ahead of Yuzho is Xian-a city’s famed for its terracotta
warriors where 13 million people have been locked down since before Christmas.
What started out a fortnight ago with a late night army of officials welding gates
shut has led to this. Some people banned from leaving their tower blocks have
taken to bartering with their neighbors, cigarettes for vegetables, other goods for
sanitary towels.
This is what most of China looks like. It’s busy, yes, you have to have a mask
when you get on the metro and there’s a temperature check, but the government
says that Zero Covid Strategy has achieved this for about 18 months now, that’s a
strategy that includes things like this pop-up tents where you can get a booster on
the way home and win prizes as well. But it also includes very very harsh measures
that can be imposed on a city in a matter of hours.
Harsh measures, brutal enforcement, it’s been part of China’s Covid
containment since the beginning. Just last month, some cities were parading Covid
spreading offenders in public. Keeping cases at near zero is now even more
important as China prepares to host another Olympics. The winter games in
Beijing is just a month away.
China’s President Xi Jinping saw for himself the final preparations on Tuesday.
On the brink of a third term in power, he wants and needs a smooth ride at the
games. Zero Covid is the Central to that.
