Learning Episode 4:

Learner Diversity: The Community and Home

Environment

At the end of this Episode, I must be able to:

 describe the influencing factors in the home environment that affect the
students’ learning;
 seek advice concerning strategies that build relationships with
parents/guardians and the wider community (6.2.1); and
 identify effective strategies on how teachers can work together with the
family.

Activity 4.1: Observing the learner’s community and home environment.

Resource Teacher: Ma’am Jelena R. Torrez Grade/ Year Grade 10
Level:
Teacher’s Subject Area: Filipino
Signature:
School: LNHS Date: 11/26/23

The learners’ differences and the type of interaction they bring surely affect the quality of
teaching and learning. This activity is about observing and gathering data to find out how
student diversity affects learning.
To realize the Learning Outcome, work your way through these steps:
1. Select a learner from the class which you have previously observed.
2. Interview the teacher about the learner’s characteristics and the community.
3. Conduct a home visit to your selected learner’s residence.
4. Interview the parents about
a. the rules they implement at home concerning their child’s schooling.
b. The learner’s activities and behavior while at home.
5. Write the Learner’s Profile.
6. Analyze your observation and interview data.
7. Reflect on your observation experience.

Field Study 1: Observations of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment (M.D. Lucas, PhD, et.al)
An Observation/Interview Guide for Home-School Link
Use the activity form provided for you to document your observations.
Read the following carefully before you begin to observe/interview. Then write your
observation report on the space provided.
The Learner
Make a general observation of the learner. Describe him/her in each of the domains of
development:
 physical-body built and height (thin, chubby, underweight, overweight), level of
physical activity (fast, slow, lethargic, active, etc.)
The student's height is around 167.64cm; she is neither thin nor chubby; it
was just a normal body size for girls; her weight is 45 kg, which is also normal;
and in terms of physical activity, he is more active, especially in dancing.

 social-interaction with teachers and classmates (loner, shy, sociable, friendly,

gets into fights, liked by others, etc.)
She is sociable and friendly with others, but sometimes he prefers to be alone
if he is not in the mood. When it comes to interactions with her teacher, he is
extra careful, polite, and courteous, and when the teacher makes a request, she
dutyfully fulfills it without any negative reactions.

 emotional moods, temperament, cries easily, loses temper, happy, shows

enthusiasm, excited, indifferent, etc.)
She is more enthusiastic and easily excited when it comes to interacting with
her friends or doing some activity outdoors like dancing, but sometimes she
loses her temper when she is at a disadvantage and can’t depend on herself.

 cognitive (appears to understand lessons, copes with the lessons, excels, lags
behind, shows reasoning skills, turns in assignments and requirements, etc.)
She is more active when the subject is science and Filipino because she easily
understands the lesson compared to other subjects like mathematics,

Interview the Teacher

1. What are the most noticeable characteristics of the learner? (emotional disposition,
behavior and discipline, sense of responsibility, study habits, academic performance,
relationship with peers, relationship with adults, social adjustment)
She has a sense of responsibility and is always behaving right during class, and she
is also active in our activity and helps her classmates when they ask her what they don’t
understand regarding the lesson.

Field Study 1: Observations of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment (M.D. Lucas, PhD, et.al)
2. How does the teacher communicate with the parents? How often? What do they
discuss? How do they decide of the best course of action to resolve issues or problems?
Sometimes the parents ask about their child's learning development and if she
behaved well and didn’t cause any trouble. Then sometimes the teacher asks the parents
about their upcoming outdoor activity. The teacher will remind the parent of what they
need to be cautious about and what they need to bring. They also remind the parent to
tell their child to be extra careful, although the teacher already reminds the student, but
to ensure the safety of the child, the teacher and parents need to discuss it thoroughly to
avoid a possible accident.

3. How does the teacher utilize resources in the community to support the teaching-
learning process? How does the teacher work with the community to meet the needs of
the learners?
Sometimes, I will provide the materials myself if needed, like books, models, or
dioramas for the activity. Then, sometimes, I will ask the student to bring their own
materials, and as much as possible, I will let them bring the material that is already
available in their home so that they do not need to buy it outside. If there is really
nothing, I will let them group themselves and share the expenses of the material they
need to buy.

Interview with Parents

1. Conduct a home visit. Once there, observe the home set-up. (Home is orderly, family
pictures in the living room, etc.)
2. Use the Interview Questions below. Just ask the questions with which you feel
comfortable.

Suggested Parent Interview Guide

Your teacher may ask you to use a more detailed interview guide. Be free to translate
the questions, if necessary.

After you have gathered all the necessary data, write the learner’s development profile using
the outline below. Type the profile on a separate sheet and attached it to this Learning Episode.

THE LEARNER’S DEVELOPMENT PROFILE (Outline)

The Learner’s Development Profile

Field Study 1: Observations of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment (M.D. Lucas, PhD, et.al)
Name of the Learner: Earl Lyn Joy M. Malagayo

School: Limay National Highchool

Date of Home Visit: 11/26/23

Date of Birth: 10/22/2008 Age 15

Grade/ Year Level: 10 Gender female

Physical Development
In paragraph form, describe the physical development of the learner. Combine the
teacher’s, parents’ responses, and your own observations.
Based on my interview and my observation, the physical development of the learners is
normal. Although the learners look malnourished, that is only her physical appearance and
has nothing to do with their health problems. The learner is very active and healthy;
although sometimes she is a picky eater, the student still eats some healthy foods to sustain
her physical development.
Social Development
In paragraph form, describe the physical development of the learner. Combine the
teacher’s, parents’ responses, and your own observations.
The student is an active and enthusiastic individual who loves to play and socialize
with her friends. Although sometimes she looks like an introvert and loves to stay alone,
that only happens when she has a problem or is thinking about something that only she can
understand. Then sometimes she loves to mess around with her friend and make fun of
some things, but she knows the boundary and will not offend the person.
Emotional-Moral Development
In paragraph form, describe the physical development of the learner. Combine the
teacher’s, parents’ responses, and your own observations.
Every time the student has a problem, she will not approach her parents to ask for
advice or share the burden; she will try to solve it on her own. Then, if her friends or
family have a problem, she will take the initiative to share the burden and sometimes give
advice. She was kind to those who were kind to her and avoided those who were not good
to her.
Cognitive Development
In paragraph form, describe the physical development of the learner. Combine the
teacher’s, parents’ responses, and your own observations.
The student loves to learn something new, especially when it comes to Filipino,

Field Study 1: Observations of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment (M.D. Lucas, PhD, et.al)
science, and art. She is also good at writing essays and loves to draw a lot. Then the thing
she has a hard time learning is the mathematics subject, but she still tries hard to
understand it until she comes up with the answer.
Findings
Write here your salient findings about the learner.
The learner was kind and caring to those she loved, but although that was the case
sometimes, she still displayed her hot-tempered personality and looked like a bad girl,
even if it was contrary to what she said and meant.
Conclusions
Write your conclusions after you have analyzed the impact of the school and the home on
the learner’s development. The questions in the Your Analysis portion of this Learning
Episode can help you.
The home and school environment have a big impact on the learner's development
because what she sees, hears, and feels has an impact on the learner, which is very crucial
for her as an individual. In conclusion, the environment has a big role in shaping the
learner's physical and mental development, as well as their personality and behavior and
how they manage or adapt to a certain situation.
Recommendations
Write your recommendations.
The collaboration between the teacher and parent for the student's development is very
important, especially the interaction between the parents and their child. Parents should
stay updated on their child's development and try to ask what her or his day-to-day
experience was to get to know them better. If there is a day that their child has a problem
or acts unusually, the parents will know what to do. Then, between the parents and teacher,
their collaboration can help the teacher think of some strategies and countermeasures for
the sake of student development, as well as for the parents to stay updated on what is
happening to their child on the school campus.
.

REFLECT
1. Reflect on your own development as a child. What type of parenting did you experience?
How did it affect you?
When I was a child, my parents were always taking care of me and would give me what
I wanted as long as I did something good and behaved well. They would support me in what
I wanted to do and sometimes praise me, especially when I did better in my schoolwork,

Field Study 1: Observations of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment (M.D. Lucas, PhD, et.al)
but I realize something when I was in grade 4 in elementary school, one time I made fun of
my classmate and the teacher want my parent to come to school to talk to them but when I
tell it to my parents, they said that it’s my problem to take care of and it’s all my fault and
after that, I didn't go to school in the whole week, and after that week I realize that telling
others my problem is not important because at the end only I can fix them, from then
on, whenever there's a reward, meeting or activity in school I will not tell my parents and I
will let them know through the others because I feel that they will just ignore me again just
like that time when I was only a kid. Until now, I knew that they loved and cared for me,
but I just couldn’t bring myself to approach them about my problem, hoping that it would
ease my burden.
2. As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school collaboration? How can you
work well with the parents? How can you help them? How can they help you?
I will stay updated on my student profile and their condition at home to get to know them
well so that I can think of some strategies for how to handle and teach them. I will
collaborate with my student parents to understand my students better, to let the parents also
understand their child and help them if needed, and for the parents to know how their child
is doing on the school campus.

SHOW Your Learning Artifacts

1. Color Your World

Make an artistic, colorful, and creative visual expression of your insights or feelings about the
influence of the home and school and community to the learner.
Then, write a few statements on the space below about your visual art.

The student will embrace what is happening in her/his environment; they will adopt and
affect the way they think and act. The home and school environments also play a big role
in the student's development and what she/he will like and do in a certain situation.

Weekly Reflection

I realize that knowing your student from just one point of view is not enough to
know and understand them better; you need to use more effort by collecting some
information from their parents or observing them directly. A home visit is sometimes the
best way to get to know them and understand their situation in order to come to a
conclusion about why their students act the way they do.

Understanding your student is not easy, yet it is very important. By knowing

them, you can think of and create some strategies for how you will teach the lesson that
they will understand and some activities that they can do. Because every student has a
different level of understanding, skills, and talent, you need to try not just one but many
strategies for the sake of their learning development.

Being a teacher is not easy; you need to experience many struggles before you
succeed at what you want to do. The teaching profession is not just teaching or
facilitating students learning; rather, every teacher is a second parent to every student
who will guide them for their future and help them achieve their goal.
