The impressive result is a harmonious symphony of modern
materials, colours and textures.
Of contemporary style, this rear garden is proof positive that you can
inject some industrial chic into an outdoor design and still have a space
that is extremely welcoming. Designed by Steve Taylor of COS Design
and built by Matt Seymour and the Apex Landscapes’ construction
team, this multi-levelled outdoor retreat, which features two decks,
strikes just the right note whether entertaining or relaxing with family.
“The main goal was to create a multifunctional outdoor entertaining
area which would include a swimming pool and alfresco dining area,”
says Matt. “The owners also wanted us to turn the change in levels in
the backyard into an asset, make the space much more private and
ensure that a tiered timber deck would be part of the new design.”
While this garden is replete with exemplary features, perhaps the
most arresting is the floating concrete dining table and barbecue
benchtop. The benchtop, into which a streamlined Electrolux

H 10 years, the owners of this Melbourne property decided it

was time to have a bit of Bali all-year-round. Now, their once
humble backyard contains an authentic thatch-topped Balinese
hut, a timber deck and a long reflective pond, just three of the many
features that make this Balinese-style retreat so enticing.
The logistics sorted, the first task was to plot the pond, measuring
from the house and setting heights to the existing floor levels. The pond
was constructed with a concrete base and reinforced-concrete-filled
block walls capped to match the natural stone used for the paved areas.
To keep the pond water clean and healthy, and to minimise maintenance,
a bio-filter with UV clarifier was installed.
Six submersible low-voltage pond lights create spectacular night
viewing, as well as highlight two nearby urns set atop pedestals. They
also create a shimmering effect on the surrounding surfaces. To maintain
water levels in the pond, a rainwater diverter was connected to an existing
downpipe. The pond also has an overflow diverter to disperse excess
water around the garden.
As the garden is viewed from the open-plan kitchen, lounge and
dining room, having the deck at floor level creates a seamless transition
between interior and exterior spaces. The hardwood deck flows through
the garden at the same level as the home’s interior, with just one step

area. The trick is to make up for what the space lacks
in size with style and good design. Keen to do just that,
the owners of this Perth property were able to reinvent their tiny patio,
turning it into an inviting entertaining courtyard with the help of designer
Denise Staffa from Outside In.
Achieving this, however, was to be no small feat as the original patio
was an eyesore. Dated red brick paving set the tone and was joined by a
space-hogging clothesline, an unsightly gas unit and an untrustworthy
pathway that sloped down towards the gate. No longer content to shut
the back door and pretend the patio did not exist, the owners wanted to
expand on the home’s stylish interior design and create a garden that
reflected the personality of the elegant residence.
The transformation began with a thorough assessment of the site, as
well as the owners’ lifestyle needs, and then a modern, space-enhancing
design began to take form. Denise conceived of a space that would
include an impressive water feature, a place to cook and dine, casual
seating, increased privacy from neighbours, planting accents to draw the

EXPERT TIP
The two main ways to tension a shade
sail are with stainless-steel turnbuckles
or using a pulley system. If you want
your shade sail or awning to be up
permanently, then the turnbuckle is the
best option. If you’re looking to install
one that is only used on an occasional
basis, however, the pulley system is
ideal and can easily be set up and taken
down in a matter of minutes.

and manually pulled down, fastened to the
ground with some sort of buckle, strap, rope
or fastener. The next level up has models with
a manual winding system and at the higher
end of the market, motorised models extend
and retract the blind.

PERGOLAS AND MORE

If you’re considering a permanent shade
structure, think about the orientation of your
home, pool and any other existing outdoor
structures as these are all elements that will
affect positioning. You also need to look at the
positioning of large trees and neighbouring
buildings. Other considerations when
deciding where to place a gazebo, pergola
or cabana is how far away it will be from the
kitchen (unless you’re planning to integrate
a full outdoor kitchen). If you plan on using
it for dining, it should be close enough to the
kitchen so that carrying plates and food does
not become cumbersome.

Another way to unify the space is to open
it up. “Large bifold doors leading out to your

living a lot of justice,” adds Rob. “It opens
up and links the areas, giving you natural

can really create something unique and personalise the area. There are many
things that will give your entertaining area the ‘wow’ factor,” says Rob.
Outdoor fireplaces built into a feature wall, for example, are a modern
inclusion in outdoor entertaining areas, even in warmer climates. The
glow of flickering flames invites guests to warm their toes or gather
around and enjoy the ambience.
Another contemporary trend in outdoor structures is screening — it
defines areas and gives privacy — and many designs allow natural light
and breezes to filter through. One contemporary option is laser-cut
powder-coated steel. “These look great when viewed from indoors looking
out as they can be used to shield a boundary fence or outside in your
entertaining area,” says Rob. Or, you could choose timber-slatted screens
for a warm contemporary look.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Lighting is not only a necessity, it can also be a feature of an outdoor
entertaining structure. Uplights, downlights, deck lights, ceiling lights, laser-
cut light boxes — there is no shortage of ways to light a pergola, gazebo, deck
or cabana and the garden areas surrounding it.
Lastly, decorate your outdoor structure with furniture and soft furnishings
(outdoor rugs, scatter cushions, table runners) that reflect your taste and
style, whether that is modern, minimalist, retro, country chic or eco-friendly.
Add artwork or a vertical garden to the walls, a selection of decorative pots,
perhaps a tabletop water feature or a sculpture in a corner to create an
inviting space that provides just the right atmosphere for entertaining.

TALKING TIMBER
Being a natural product, timber is by
its very nature durable, as trees absorb
moisture and are subject to drying winds.
Nonetheless, you need to take care when
selecting the right timber for a structural
project, such as a deck. Baigent Taylor
from Just Deck It says: “Always go with
timbers that fall within natural durability

the longevity of your deck.”

However, if you do want steps, what sort of
steps would you like? Steps can be open slats or
filled in, or they can be narrow or wide — some
extend to the actual width of the entire deck and
provide additional seating when friends drop in.
New-look decking shapes are very diverse.
“It’s not like it used to be with a standard 3m x
3m square,” says Scott. “We’ve done hexagon
decking, L-shaped decks, and egg- and kidney-
shaped decking — you name it, if people can
imagine it, then we can create it,” he says.

To create the deck that will best suit your needs,
consider what you’d like included in the space.
Do you do a lot of entertaining? How many
people will be using the area? “It can also help
to plan what furniture and inclusions you’d like

for chairs to be pulled out from tables, and
space around access areas.”

HIDE AND SEEK

If you have a less-than-lovely storage area
for bins and larger items, or just a boring
old shed that does nothing to lift the look of
your garden, you can screen it so it doesn’t
detract from your view or any nearby
outdoor living zone. A simple slatted screen
or enclosure can easily do the trick. This
can be constructed using timber, a wood-
plastic composite material or timber-look
aluminium. Bamboo panels or natural
reed screening are other great ideas. For
something greener, other options might
be a tall evergreen hedge or a leafy living
screen of fast-growing clumping bamboo.

IDEA 4: SHELVE IT
Consider wall-mounted outdoor shelves or
modular shelving systems. One of the most stylish
of the shelving systems is the powder-coated
aluminium and teak Frame collection from Cane-
line. This system can be built up or extended to
meet your particular storage needs and can be
teamed with matching storage boxes and wall-
mounted shelves. If you’re opting for a custom-
designed outdoor kitchen, use the opportunity to
incorporate purpose-built shelving and under-
bench storage in the form of cabinetry so you have
somewhere to store utensils and serving ware.

IDEA 5: BUILD IT IN
You can get creative and include storage into
a permanent element of the garden, such as a
bench seat. All you need is a sturdy lift-up lid
and a well-sealed waterproof space beneath,
and the bench can be home to pool toys,
cushions … anything you like. Storage could also
be incorporated into a wall niche with a hinged
framed mirror for a door. Or you might like to
custom-build a timber ottoman or coffee table,
give it a lift-up lid and use the concealed space
for storing smaller items. Put it on wheels and
you have the bonus of portability.

PATIO PLEASERS
• Flexibility: Freestanding patio heaters
are available in several sizes and
styles. They provide warmth efficiently
and quickly and are handy for small
gatherings or if space is limited. They
are ideal for courtyards, patios and
decks, and they give you the flexibility
to create warmth where you want it.
You can also find gas patio heaters with
integrated lighting or optional extras like
clip-on tables for resting drinks.
• Finishes: Patio heaters also come in a
number of different, durable finishes such
as stainless steel and powder-coated
aluminium. If you live by the sea, the
more expensive stainless-steel models
would be best. Also check for features
such as wheels for easy movement, tie-
downs for windy locations, and a cover to
protect it from the elements.
• Fuel: A gas patio heater can run on LPG
in cylinders or be connected to a natural
gas supply. Look for a model with a safety
tip-over switch, which turns the gas
supply off if the heater is knocked over.

EXPERT TIPS
• Focus on “spot heating” in the main
area (for example, over an outdoor table)
rather than trying to heat the entire
outdoor space. This will be more efficient
and help reduce both the initial purchase
cost and ongoing running costs.
• Try to plan ahead. If you’re building or
renovating, bring the connections to the
outdoor area. Even if you don’t install
outdoor heating immediately, it will be
much cheaper to install the units later if
the utility connections are already there.
• Bear in mind that many of the new
outdoor heaters available today are for
permanent installation. This means, if
they are well placed, they will actually
contribute to an increase in the value of
your house price, so buy a good-quality
product. Any money spent on an outdoor
entertainment area is a good investment.

Gas fireplaces have a clean modern look

and are easy to install. The Escea outdoor gas
fireplace range, for example, can be installed
into a wall or masonry cavity with ease and
comes with a choice of fascias and fuel beds
so you can tailor the look to suit your outdoor
décor. No flue is needed. Most gas fireplaces
have replica logs within the firebox so they
give the look of a traditional wood-burning
fireplace, although some models feature
white stones or coloured crystals.

ELECTRIC HEATERS
A few years ago, the range of electric outdoor
heaters wasn’t all that broad. Today, you have a
lot more options with one of the most popular
choices being the Heatstrip, available from
Thermofilm Australia. This slimline, rectangular-
shaped electric radiant heater can be used in any
covered outdoor space, can be attached to the
ceiling or a wall, and doesn’t glow so remains
unobtrusive. And, according to the manufacturer,
heat can be felt up to three metres away in a
part-open, covered outdoor space.

PERFECT PEBBLES
If you like the look of pebbles and have
some creative flair, a fun option is to
use pebbles of a contrasting colour set
in mortar to create a decorative pattern
in a paved area. Or you can use pebbles
as a decorative form of mulch in garden
beds. You can also use pebbles around
stepping stones so the pavers appear to
be “floating” in a sea of polished stone,
or you can place them around the base
of a water feature for a natural look.
Crushed gravel is an option for garden
paths when you want a natural look, and a
permeable surface. Gravel isn’t as durable
as a solid-stone path, but gravel paths are
certainly charming, lend themselves to the
easy creation of meandering shapes and are
generally inexpensive. Gravel paths look very
much at home in cottage, rustic, bushland
or Mediterranean-style gardens.
