What is the nervous system?

The nervous system is like the body's wiring system. It sends messages between
different parts of the body, helping us move, feel things, think, and react to what's
happening around us. It's made up of the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves
throughout the body.

The Two types of nervous system are:

- The central nervous system
- The peripheral nervous system

● The central nervous system

The central nervous system (CNS) comprises the brain and spinal cord. It
integrates and processes sensory information, coordinates voluntary and
involuntary actions, and serves as the main control center of the body.

The Brain
Think of the brain as the big boss. It's responsible for processing information from
your senses, like what you see, hear, and feel. It also controls your thoughts,
emotions, and memories. It's in charge of everything you do, from breathing to
solving a math problem.

The spinal cord

The spinal cord is a tubular bundle of nerves running through the spine. It relays
messages between the brain and the rest of the body, controlling reflexes and
transmitting sensory and motor information.

● The peripheral nervous system

refers to parts of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. It
includes the cranial nerves, spinal nerves and their roots and branches, as
well as peripheral nerves.
The peripheral nerves
Peripheral nerves extend from the central nervous system to various parts of the
body, transmitting sensory information and motor commands. They regulate
sensation, movement, and organ function outside the brain and spinal cord.

The median nerve

The median nerve is a major nerve in the arm, originating from the neck and
running through the forearm. It controls movement and sensation in the muscles
and skin of the hand and thumb.

The radial nerve

The radial nerve is a major nerve in the arm, responsible for extending the elbow,
wrist, and fingers, and providing sensation to the back of the arm, forearm, and
hand. Damage to this nerve can cause weakness or paralysis in these areas.

The ulnar nerve

The ulnar nerve is one of the major nerves in the arm, responsible for providing
sensation and motor function to parts of the forearm and hand. It is one of the
three main nerves in the arm, along with the median and radial nerve.

The tibial nerve

The tibial nerve is a sciatic nerve branch, that supplies sensation to the sole and
controlling muscles involved in foot movement and ankle flexion.
