SECTION A
QUESTION 1
1.1 Various options are provided as possible answers to the following questions.
Choose the correct answer and write only the letter (A to D) next to the question
number (1.1.1 to 1.1.10) in the ANSWER BOOK, for example 1.1.11 D.
1.1.1 The inheritance of one trait does not depend on the inheritance of another
trait. This represents …
1.1.2 Which of the following correctly identifies the relationship between alleles,
chromosomes, and genes?
1.2 Give the correct biological term for each of the following descriptions. Write only
the term next to the question number (1.2.1 to 1.2.6) in the ANSWER BOOK.
1.2.2 Unspecialised cells which are capable of giving rise to any other cells of
the same organism.
1.2.3 The genetic crossing of two organisms in which two pairs of contrasting
characteristics are studied. (3 x 1) (3)
1.3 Indicate whether each of the statements in COLUMN I applies to A only, B only,
both A and B or none of the items in COLUMN II. Write A only, B only, both A
and B, or none next to the question number (1.3.1 to 1.3.8) in the ANSWER
BOOK.

SECTION B
QUESTION 2
2.1 In rice plants the allele for high yield (H) is dominant over the allele for low yield
(h). The allele for a tall stem (T) is dominant over the allele for a short stem (t).
A plant breeder wants to produce a rice plant variety with a high yield and a short
stem.
2.1.2 Give ALL the possible genotypes of the gametes of variety B. (1)
2.1.3 Give the genotype(s) of the variety the plant breeder wants to produce. (2)
2.1.4 Describe how the plant breeder would be able to produce rice plants with
a high yield and short stems only. (2)
(7)
2.2 In a certain type of plant, the genes that determine the shape of the pollen grains
and the colour of the flowers are linked on the same chromosome. The pollen
grains could either be long (D) or round (d) and the flowers could either be purple
(E) or red (e).
2.2.2 Give ALL the possible genotypes of the gametes of plant A. (2)
2.2.3 Using a genetic cross, indicate the proportion of the phenotypes of the F1
generation. (6)

2.3 The diagram below represents the inheritance of colour blindness in a family. Use
XD for normal colour vision and Xd for the allele for colour blindness.
2.3.1 Give evidence from the pedigree diagram that suggests that colour
blindness is a sex-linked genetic disorder. (1)
2.3.3 What is the percentage chance that Mary and Frank’s next daughter will
be colour blind if Mary is a carrier of the mutation? (1)
2.3.4 Explain how Tom and Barbara have a son who is colour blind even though
neither of them suffers from the condition. (3)
2.3.5 Explain why any son of a colour-blind female will always have this
disorder. (3)

QUESTION 3
3.1 Mutation is the sudden change in the genetic composition of an organism. Harmful
mutations result in genetic disorders.

3.2 The diagram below shows a genetic engineering process. A donor cell was taken
from the muscle cell of a male champion horse (stallion) to create a new offspring.
3.2.2 Explain why only the nucleus of the donor cell is used. (2)
3.2.3 Why is the donor cell extracted from the champion horse? (2)
a) structure A (1)
b) ovum B (1)
