The need to switch off?
According to research published by Ofcom, most people
in the UK are dependent on their digital devices and
apparently need constant access to the internet.

The smartphone became popular in the UK in 2008, with
17% of the population owning one by the end of that year.

people’s daily lives, and it is the device that people say
they would miss the most.
People now expect constant internet access wherever
they may be, with 64% of adults saying that it is an
essential part of their lives. Over the past decade, access
to the internet has improved, and the way we
communicate with each other has changed as a result.

devices, on average, every 12 minutes, with 65% of adults
under the age of 35 looking at their phone within 5
minutes of waking up. More than half of those
questioned admitted that the use of connected devices
interrupts face-to-face conversations with friends and

So how much time should we spend online? That’s not a
question that can be easily answered, since a large
percentage of people use the internet in their jobs.
However, we need to spend time away from our screens if
we are to have a healthy relationship with our friends and
family. So next time you’re at dinner with friends, switch
off your phone. You won’t regret it.
