EARTHQUAKE

- Shock or series of shocks which occur as the result of the earth’s


plates moving.

- Can happen at all plate margins

DEFINITIONS
Focus - point below the surface where vibrations of earthquake are
generated.

Epicentre - location on earth's surface where vibrations are felt the


strongest. It's directly above focus.

Shockwaves - vibrations generated from the focus of earthquake.

Richter Scale - Scale which measures earthquakes, ranges from 0 - 9, nine


being the worst.

Seismograph - instrument used to continuously monitor vibrations of


earthquakes.
EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKES
- Roads destroyed
- Buildings collapse
- Tsunamis may occur
- Landslides
- Loss of electricity

PRECAUTIONS:
Before earthquake
- Have emergency supplies
- Have effective evacuation plan
- Fasten shelves to walls

During earthquakes
- Do not use elevators
- Drop to the ground and take cover
- Stay away from glass windows and doors

After earthquake
- Check for serious injuries
- Aftershocks
- Beware of tsunamis if living near coast
- Inspect utilities such as gas, electricity, water
