Lab # 01:

GIS Lab Practice

Introduction:
GIS:
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and
displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface. GIS can show many different kinds of data on
one map, such as streets, buildings, and vegetation. This enables people to more easily see, analyze,
and understand patterns and relationships.

Uses of GIS:

Every day, GIS powers millions of decisions around the world. It makes a big impact on our lives
and you might not even realize it. For example, we use GIS for:

 Pinpointing new store locations

 Reporting power outages
 Analyzing crime patterns
 Routing in-car navigation
 Forecasting and predicting wealth

ArcGIS:
ArcGIS is a family of client, server and online geographic information system
software developed and maintained by Esri. ArcGIS was first released in 1999 and
originally was released as ARC/INFO, a command line-based GIS system for
manipulating data.
