About the Building Code of Australia (BCA)

Current staff and students of the University of Ballarat can access the BCA online. The BCA provides essential technical regulations for the design and construction of buildings, and establishes a uniform approach to building regulation across Australia. It covers topics such as structure, fire resistance, health and amenity, building access and egress, and building services and equipment. From this resource you can also access online all of the Australian Standards that are referred to in the BCA.

Accessing the BCA

Go to the UB Library website at www.ballarat.edu.au/library. You have two options: Click the Find journals and databases tab and scroll down to the alphabet links. Open the Access Library Resources menu and click Search for individual databases. Click the B link and find Building Code of Australia in the list. The BCA is a resource that requires a log in; to access the login details click the corresponding information icon and note them down. To go to the BCA, click the title link and it will open in a separate browser window. Only one user can be logged on to the BCA at any one time; if it is in use you may need to wait to use it.

Using the BCA

Search results will display the relevant volume and page heading; click the page heading to view the document. To get back to a list search results, click on the Search Results icon in the grey toolbar at the bottom of the page. Browse the BCA Use the drop down heading next to Current BCA to browse the indexes of the individual volumes and link to relevant sections from there.Volume One relates mainly to Class 2 to 9 buildings and Volume Two relates mainly to Class 1 and 10 buildings (Housing Provisions).

Bulletins The Bulletins tab takes you to the list of Australian Building Regulation Bulletins which you can then view. The Bulletin is published twice a year and is a techncial industry magazine which focuses on BCA related issues and includes technical papers, expert opinions and feature articles. Archives The Archives tab lists previous versions of the BCA which can also be viewed.

Printing from the BCA

Theres a couple of options for printing from the BCA. If you want to print several different sections, the second option might be useful, particularly as some pages dont have much text on them. Use the Print icon in the grey toolbar that appears at the bottom of the page. Highlight the section you want to print and then use the browsers Edit menu and Copy. Open a new Word document and use the Edit menu and Paste. Once you have copied and pasted all of the relevant sections to one Word document, print it through the File menu and Print. Alternatively, you can save the sections of the BCA you have copied into a Word document by using the File menu and Save As option.

Logging out
When you are finished using the BCA, click the Logout tab to make it available to other users. You will be automatically logged out if the resource has been idle for 20 minutes; you will need to log in again if you want to continue.
