PREFACE

This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Adhesives, under the
direction of the Chemical Standards Board, following a request by Committee BD/11,
Gypsum Plaster Products. It specifies requirements for adhesives intended for bonding
gypsum plaster linings to wood and metal framing members.
The standard is based on ASTM C 557–73, Adhesives for Fastening Gypsum Wallboard to
Wood Framing, and acknowledgement is made of the assistance received therefrom.
The tests specified in this standard use gypsum plasterboard as a plaster lining. However,
other plaster linings, e.g. fibre reinforced gypsum plaster sheet, may also be used.
It has not been found practicable to include requirements for corrosion of metal framing
members, because of difficulty in relating corrosive effects and bonding properties of
water–based mastic adhesives. However, a pH requirement has been included.

APPENDIX A

METHOD FOR DETERMINING SAG RESISTANCE

A1 SCOPE. This Appendix sets out the method for determining the sag resistance of mastic adhesive
used for bonding gypsum plaster linings to framing members.

A2 PRINCIPLE. A specified volume of the adhesive is applied to a gypsum plasterboard piece which
is placed horizontally with the adhesive mass hanging vertically downwards. Its sag resistance is
determined by its ability to remain on the plasterboard for a specified time.

A3 APPARATUS AND MATERIALS. The following are required:

(a) A split template of suitable non-corrosive material, generally as shown in Fig. A1, 10 ± 0.25 mm
thick, drilled to 25 ± 0.25 mm diameter.
(b) A stainless steel spatula.
(c) Three gypsum plasterboard pieces, approximately 250 mm × 150 mm.
(d) Approximately 50 mm of 1.00 mm nominal external diameter paper clips.
Licensed to Lafarge Plasterboard Pty Ltd on 17 May 2005. 1 user personal user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

(e) Suitable oven and refrigerator.

(f) Suitable timing device.

A4 CONDITIONING. Store the adhesive and test equipment at each test temperature (4 ± 2°C,
23 ± 2°C, and 45 ± 2°C) for 24 h before testing.

A5 PROCEDURE. The procedure shall be as follows for each test temperature:

(a) Open the full container of adhesive and stir to about a third of the depth of the container.
(b) Place the template on the gypsum plasterboard piece and fill the hole with adhesive using the spatula,
taking care to wet the gypsum plasterboard piece with the adhesive and to avoid including any air
bubbles with the adhesive.
NOTE: Care should be taken to ensure that the split template is not allowed to separate during filling.
(c) Press the adhesive into the hole in the template with the spatula and strike off level.
(d) Using the straightened paper clip held vertically, separate the adhesive from the template, removing
first one half and then the other half of the template. Take care not to undercut the cylinder of
adhesive formed.
(e) Within 30 s of starting to apply the adhesive, turn the gypsum plasterboard piece over so that the
cylinder of adhesive hangs vertically downwards. Support the gypsum plasterboard pieces on blocks
in the conditioned atmosphere (4°C, 23°C or 45°C) free from vibration.

A6 REPORT. Report whether or not the adhesive has remained on the plasterboard piece for 15 min,
for each test temperature.

APPENDIX B

METHOD FOR DETERMINING TRANSFER AFTER OPEN

ASSEMBLY TIME

B1 SCOPE. This Appendix sets out the method for determining the ability of mastic adhesive used for
bonding gypsum plaster linings to framing members to transfer after a specified open assembly time.

B2 PRINCIPLE. A specified volume of the adhesive is applied to a piece of gypsum plasterboard and
allowed to stand under set conditions. A square piece of gypsum plasterboard is then pressed onto the
adhesive under a specified load, and after a specified time the assembly is pulled apart and the smaller
piece examined for adhesive transfer and/or paper failure.

B3 APPARATUS. The following apparatus is required:

(a) Template, as illustrated in Fig. B1 and made from a suitable non-corrosive material.
(b) Gypsum plasterboard pieces, 500 mm × 100 mm, and 50 mm × 50 mm.
(c) Stainless steel spatula.
Licensed to Lafarge Plasterboard Pty Ltd on 17 May 2005. 1 user personal user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

(d) Suitable weight having a mass of 2 kg.

(e) Approximately 50 mm of 1.00 mm nominal external diameter paper clips.
(f) Suitable timing device.

B4 PROCEDURE. The procedure shall be as follows:

(a) Condition the adhesive and test equipment for 24 h at a temperature of 23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5 percent
relative humidity. Place the template on the surface of the 500 mm × 100 mm piece of gypsum
plasterboard.
(b) Apply the adhesive with the spatula into the recess of the template, taking care to completely fill it.
(c) Immediately separate the adhesive from the template using the straightened paper clip. Remove the
template.
(d) After standing for 30 min at a temperature of 23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5 percent relative humidity and an
air velocity less than 20 m/min, position a 50 mm × 50 mm piece of gypsum plasterboard similarly
conditioned as in step (a), centrally on the adhesive and place a weight of 2 kg mass immediately
and centrally on the assembly. Remove the weight of 2 kg mass after 30 min.
(e) Immediately pull the assembly apart in tension and visually examine the 50 mm × 50 mm piece of
gypsum plasterboard for the percentage of adhesive transfer and/or paper failure.

B5 REPORT. Report the percentage transfer and/or paper failure for the adhesive.

METHOD FOR DETERMINING WETTING CHARACTERISTICS

C1 SCOPE. This Appendix sets out the method for determining the wetting characteristics of mastic
adhesive applied to framing members.

C2 PRINCIPLE. The adhesive is pressed against a surface of a framing member piece, and its wetting
characteristics are determined by its ability to adhere in the wet state.

C3 APPARATUS. The following apparatus is required:

C3.1 For wood framing members.
(a) Stainless steel spatula.
(b) Rough sawn hardwood (see Clause 3.1.2.1) of sufficient length and width.
C3.2 For metal framing members.
(a) Stainless steel spatula.
Licensed to Lafarge Plasterboard Pty Ltd on 17 May 2005. 1 user personal user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

(b) Appropriate metal, of sufficient length and width.

C4 PROCEDURE. The procedure shall be as follows:

(a) Using the spatula, place a daub of adhesive on the freshly cut surface of the framing member.
NOTE: The adhesive should be dabbed on once only.
(b) By reversing the pressure on the spatula, endeavour to lift the adhesive from the surface.
(c) Examine the surface of the framing member and the spatula and note whether adhesive failure occurs
in adhesion or cohesion.

C5 REPORT. Report whether the adhesive has wet the framing member, i.e. whether it has failed 100
percent in cohesion.

D2.4.1 For 24 h drying test. A shear test assembly shall be prepared as follows:
(a) Prepare a gypsum plasterboard-plywood assembly by bonding the gypsum plasterboard piece to one
of the plywood pieces without any overlap using a general purpose adhesive for wood*, ensuring
that the machine direction of the paper is as shown in Fig. D2.
NOTE: It is necessary to bond a plywood backing to the gypsum plasterboard piece to prevent the gypsum plasterboard from
fracturing during the test. Knots and patches present on the face of the plywood should be avoided when cutting samples or
carrying out adhesive tests.
(b) Prepare one face of the other plywood piece by lightly sanding with No 120 grit 3/0 garnet paper to
present a new wood, smooth surface. Wipe the sanded surface free of dust.
(c) Spread the adhesive under test on to the sanded surface with the trowel held at 90 degrees to the
surface, ensuring that the adhesive ridges are parallel with the grain of wood.
(d) Allow the adhesive an open time of 30 s from completion of spreading.
(e) Place the gypsum plasterboard-plywood assembly upon and overlapping the adhesive coated plywood
by 60 mm, thus forming a 6000 mm2 bonded area (see Fig. D2). Ensure that all pieces are assembled
perfectly square with each other (see Fig. D1 for a suitable jig).
(f) Insert the six wire spacers approximately 25 mm into the glue line. Position the spacers so that two
are on the centreline of the bonded area and the others are approximately 25 mm away from the
centre spacer and parallel to it (see Fig. D2).
(g) Compress the assembly under a centrally placed weight of 7 kg mass for 3 min.
(h) Remove the weight and immediately withdraw the spacers. Using a square cut, wipe the excess
adhesive from the bonded edges with the spatula, taking care to avoid disturbing the alignment of the
bonded pieces.
(j) Condition the assembly for 24 h at a temperature of 23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5 percent relative humidity.

APPENDIX H

METHOD FOR DETERMINING BRIDGING CHARACTERISTICS

H1 SCOPE. This Appendix sets out the method for determining the bridging characteristics of mastic
adhesive used for bonding gypsum plaster linings to framing members.

H2 PRINCIPLE. Cylinders of adhesive are applied to a recessed stud in a test frame and a gypsum
plasterboard piece is nailed onto the frame. After a specified drying time, the gypsum plasterboard piece
is momentarily pressed against both the recessed stud and the adhesive and then allowed to return. The
ability of the adhesive to adhere to the gypsum plasterboard piece across the recess is taken as a measure
of its bridging characteristics.

H3 APPARATUS. The following apparatus is required:

(a) Test frame constructed from 90 mm × 38 mm dressed kiln-dried radiata pine timber as shown in
Fig. H1.
(b) Split template as shown in Appendix A, Fig. A1.
Licensed to Lafarge Plasterboard Pty Ltd on 17 May 2005. 1 user personal user licence only. Storage, distribution or use on network prohibited.

(c) Gypsum plasterboard piece, 950 mm × 1050 mm × 10 mm.

(d) Suitable hammer and nails.

H4 PROCEDURE. The procedure shall be as follows:

(a) Apply five cylinders of adhesive using the split template to the centre recessed stud (see Fig H1),
centrally located at 200 mm intervals.
(b) Nail the gypsum plasterboard piece to the test frame as shown in Fig. H2.
(c) 15 min after adhesive application is completed, firmly press the gypsum plasterboard piece (as shown
in Fig. H2) to ensure maximum deflection of the gypsum plasterboard piece against the recessed stud.
Immediately allow the gypsum plasterboard piece to spring back to its original position.
(d) Condition the test assembly for 48 h at a temperature of 23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5 percent relative
humidity, standing the test frame in a vertical position.
(e) Using the hammer, carefully remove the nails holding the gypsum plasterboard piece to the test
frame.
(f) Grasp one edge of the gypsum plasterboard piece at points adjacent to each side of the recessed stud
and pull outwardly at 90 degrees to the surface of the gypsum plasterboard piece until it is
completely separated.
(g) Measure the dry bonded area after curing.
NOTE: This is done by measuring the area of paper tear on the back surface of the gypsum plasterboard piece.
(h) Determine the bridging characteristics as a percentage value of the ratio of the total dry bonded area
to the original surface area of the back of the gypsum plasterboard piece wetted by the adhesive
daubs applied to the recessed stud of the test frame.

H5 REPORT. Report the percentage of the bonded area on the back surface of the gypsum plasterboard
piece.
