INTRODUCTION
ABOUT THE INDUSTRY

In India cotton textiles industries which are over a quarter century old. They play an important
role in the economy producing nearly 50000million meters of cloth and earning huge foreign
exchange by export. unfortunately the industry faces a very high competition with their profit
margin pricing of finishing product is depends on availability rate of cotton, supply and demand
export obligation, Govt. registration, extent modernization and obviously the management ability
and so on. The cotton textile industry is the largest industry in the organized structure of
manufacturing. The textile industry in India constitute of distinct section representing broadly 3
levels of technology and organization via mill, power room and handloom. The first attempt to
establish a cotton textile in India was made since 1848, under the name of Bowcarcha cotton mills
new culcuttabu English enterprise. It was Mr.Dorer, a business man with greatest enterprise vision
and foresight. Who happens to be the first Indian textile industries to establish a mill in Bombay
name son Bombay Spinning Mill in the year 1854? The period from 1854 was really a good period

which 409 are spinning mills and 289 as composite mills. Quite a large number of spinning mills
190 are located in Tamilnadu. While the appreciate number of composite mills 168 are located in
state of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Our countries average output is about 2700kg of cotton per
sectors. India’s total export in the world trade is only 0.6% with us and 45billion and this is
expected to raise 1% le, us 80 billion over the next 5years. The world trade in textile and clothing
around us 250 billion of which one country’s share is 3.3% about us 12 billion, India’s cotton
textile industry occupied a unique position it accountants for about 7% of the gross domestic
product, 20% of the export earnings. It contributes over Rs.5/- billion in terms of exciseduty to the
exchequers. After agriculture this industry is the second largest employment provides in the
country as its cultivation provides 200 more days / hectare of employment. Around 50
million people earn their livelihood through its cultivation or trade and processing. A considerable
it’s in directed employment. At the time of independence the textile industry, the largest organized
industry in the country, comprised an estimated 2.5 million handloom eavesand 356 mills, with
an installed capacity of about 10.3 lakhs workers. After that, the increased in fabrics production is
mainly because of the availability of major raw-materials, such as cotton and man-made fiber
however the chare of cotton gradually declined from percent in the fifties to 69 percent in 1997.o

COTTON TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN KERALA
The textile industry in Kerala is the oldest and occupies a key position on the state
economy development. The Malabar spinning and wearing company at Ponnanikkara in Calicut
started in 1884. The second important textile exit setup in the state was quit on spinning mills.
However some of the mills became silk units and were taken by national textile corporation. The
national textile corporation was incorporated in April 1986, with the main objective of ensuring
continued employment to the result of closure and also for managing the over by the GOW. The

Western India Cottons Limited is a public incorporated on 06 September 1954.It is classified as
Non-govt company and is registered at Registrar Of Companies, Ernakulum. Its authorised share
capital is Rs.60000000 and its paid up capital is Rs.44932800. It is involved in spinning,weaving
and finishing of textiles. They are the manufacturer, supplier and exporter of cotton yarn, cotton
fabrics, cotton made-ups.

BACKGROUND & GROWTH


The company was registered in 1954 with the prime objective of running a composite Textile
Mill consisting of Spinning, Weaving and Processing operations. Despite the ups and downs in the
textile industry the Company maintained its manufacturing operations with good results. In
keeping with the changing business scenario, the Company reduced its dependence on its own
manufacturing and started outsourcing its products. Backed by its business standing of over 50
years in the textile business and as a supplier of quality cotton textiles the Company was able to
create a network of business partners who undertake the manufacturing activity under a process
control system defined by the Company, whereby we are able to supply our products to the
complete satisfaction of our customers.
The flexibility it derived in outsourcing the manufacturing operations has helped it to enter
the area of specialty fabrics and madeups with specific applications both for the domesticmarkets
and exports. From its core business of textiles, the Company is leveraging its building assets in
providing ware housing facility for business operating in Kerala and a humble beginning has been
made in this regard. Despite the uncertainties in today’s ever changing business environment the
company is able to make progress and achieved good operational results.

ACCOUNTING POLICIES
• The company has been consistently following accrual method in accounting its income
and expenditure . The accounting is on the basis of going concern concept
• The values of fixed assets have been arrived at on historical cost
• Depreciation has been calculated on straightline and also writton down value method
• Investments are valued at cost
• . Stock of raw materials, stores & spares and finished goods are valued at cost or net
realisable value whichever is lower.Cost assigned for valuation of stores and spares is on
weighted average basis and of raw materials and finished goods on first in first out basis,
after providing for diminution in value of obsolete/damaged and slow moving items. /
• Provision for gratuity is made as per LIC Cash Accumulation Scheme.The liability for
gratuity to the extent not covered by the scheme is provided for in the accounts. /
• Revenue from sales transactions is recognised as and when the property in the goods is
transferred to the buyer for a definite consideration. Export incentives are recognised on
accrual basis. /
• Contingent liabilities are generally not provided in the accounts and are shown in item No.1
of Notes on Accounts. /

EMPLOYEE SUPPORT MECHANISM

The company has a Whistle blower policy which has been communicated to the
employee. The policy provides a mechanism for employees to report their concerns
about un ethical behaviour , actual or suspected , fraud or violation of company ,
code of conduct and provides safeguards against victimisation of employees who
avail the mechanism

WAGE PAYMENT:

Western India Cottons provide proper and precise incentive scheme for compensation for its
employees. It includes:

1) Basic Pay + VDA + HRA ( 10% of Basic Pay )


2) PF for each employees is Basic Pay + 12% of DA
3) ESI collected from employees with a salary of Rs 1500 per month is 1.75%. While for
employees it is 4.75%.
4) VDA (Variable Dearness Allowance) is calculated from the VDA list issued by the
department of statistics.

TRADE UNIONS OF WICL:

Western India Plywood’s has many trade unions for its workers. They are listed as follows:

3) AITUC- Affiliated with CPI
4) STU- Affiliated to Muslim League.
TICKET OR ATTENDANCE CARDS:

Ticket or attendance cards are given to every worker in the company. It is issued free of cost and
shows important details like his name, classification etc. While coming to work every day in the
company every work man shall punch his card or ticked at the place provided in the time office.

A punching machine is kept that immediately punches the date and time to the card. These
tickets are kept on the shelf next to it according to the classification which is later collected by the
time clerk. Similarly a worker should punch his card after his shift work is over.

If a workman fails to punch the attendance card he will lose the attendance for the period. Unless
he makes a report to the manager his failure within the next two hours.

ATTENDANCE AND LATE COMING:

All workers should be at work at the time fixed and should punch the cards appropriately. If a
workman attending late or reasonable up to a period of one hour and not exceeding three times a
month may be admitted for work and such workman are liable to deduction provided in for the
payment of the Wages Act, 1936. If a workman attends late for more than 3 times a month he will
be treated as absent.

If a workman leaves the factory premises during the work hours without any prior permission from
the concerned authority shall be liable to be treated as absent for the whole day. A worker can
leave the premises on official company work.

LEAVES AND HOLIDAYS:

A worker will be allowed to take leaves with wages according to chapter VII of the Factories Act.
In case of the monthly paid workman, the wages with leave will be allowed when he takes leave
in any particular period of month. He will get wages for the leaves taken this way.

National and festival holidays will be allowed to workers with wages according to the Kerala
Industrial Establishment Act (National and festival holidays). These leaves are allowed according
to this act and they will also receive a festival bonus.
Leaves for situations like maternity leave, accidental leave etc will be allowed to the workman
according to Employees State Insurance (ESI). They should be applied early and must contain
valid proof like medicinal certificate, doctors documents etc.

Workman can also take a causal leave without wages for ten days in aggregate in calendar year.
All the leave applications should be submitted in a prescribed leave form and should be forwarded
through the head of section of the Manager whose decision shall be taken.

TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT:

An employee can be terminated from his employment in case of misbehaviour, or bad conduct,
or constant late arrival or any other particular reason. A permanent worker can be terminated from
the work by giving one month notice prior stating the reasons and other information regarding his
termination. The reason for the termination are noted and recorded in writing and shall be
communicated to the workmen.

No temporary workman. Whether monthly paid or weekly paid and no probationary workman shall
be entitled for any pay when he is terminated. The workman will be given a chance to explain or
defend against the charges of misconduct alleged against him. Where the employment of any
workman is terminated the wages earned by him and other dues that the company owes to him
shall be paid within a period of 3 days since his termination.

RETIREMENT:

Any workmen who is declared mentally unfit or found be of continued ill health or reached the
age of 58 shall be retired from the service according to the Gratuity Act. The permanent worker
can also opt for voluntary retirement and has to give fourteen days notice prior to his retirement.

❖ PUNCH CARD SYSTEM, CANTEEN AND STORE FACILITIES:

The company has installed a punch card system, and has also provided good canteen and store
facilities for its workers and employees.

❖ WELFARE & SAFETY MEASURES:

The welfare measures taken by the company for its employees are satisfactory however the
safety measures of the workers are not up the mark and needs improvement.

❖ TOP QUALITY PRODUCTS:

Western India Cottons focuses on producing products that are of the top class quality and delivered
right on time.

❖ QUICK TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES:

The company is located near all the modes of transportation. Waterways, railways, roadways etc.
So transportation of the goods is very fast and smooth and the company has a number of choices
of transporting.

for the workers engaged in production department as they deal with heavy machines.

The company should work to provide good and timely medical facilities to the workers. Since
the workers may suffer from dizziness, fatigue, respiratory problems in work.

✓ FORMATION OF WORK COMMITTEES:

The company can take steps in formation of the work committees which helps in maintaining good
industrial relation.

✓ SUGGESTION SYSTEM:

The management can adopt suggestions system for getting various suggestions which can be useful
and implemented to smoothen the overall working of the company.

This internship training in Western India Cottons has given me a clear idea about how the
organization functions in this efficient yet effective manner. The organization is based on many
rules, policies, programmers and procedures followed carefully and accurately. There is effective
utilization of resources, excellent coordination between the departments and every employees
contributes his best to the company.

Western India Cottons is successful in maintaining a cordial relationship between each and every
worker and employee in the company. Here each and every department is aiming to achieve the
primary goal of the organization. Every person who works in this company contributes his share
to his maximum. The company takes care of its workers and employees by providing them with
welfare measures and health facilities rather than just making profit.

However despite the company’s overall efficiency there are some problems or short comings
which if given proper attention can be solved and this in turn can take company to new heights..

Overall we can say that Western India Cottons is a company that stands by its policies and
considers the customer as the true king in the market. It does not compromise in any way regarding
