Electronic unit injectors

The engine has six electronic unit injectors, one for each cylinder. Each electronic unit injector is a combination of
injection pump and injector, but operates at a considerably higher pressure than a standard injector. The electronic unit
injector is mounted vertically in the centre between the four valves.

The compressor force for the electronic unit injector is transferred via a rocker arm from a lobe on the overhead
camshaft.

The sketch shows one variant of an electronic unit injector.

The electronic unit injector consists of three main parts:

Pump part, which contains a cylinder and plunger, equivalent to the pump element in an injection pump.

Injector part, with a nozzle body, nozzle needle and spring.

Valve housing, with an electro-magnetically controlled fuel valve.

The lower part of the electronic unit injector is placed in a copper sleeve against the bottom of the cylinder head, i.e.
similar to a standard injector. The centre part of the electronic unit injector, where the inlet and outlet holes for the fuel
are situated, lies in the cylinder head fuel gallery. The electronic unit injector takes in fuel directly from the fuel gallery.
The upper part of the electronic unit injector, with pressure spring and valve housing, lies above the cylinder head.

The injection timing and the amount of fuel which is to be injected into the cylinder is decided by the electronic control
unit, which transmits signals to the electro-magnetically controlled fuel valve in the electronic unit injector valve
housing. The length of the injection time determines the amount of fuel which is injected into the cylinder.
