Use a triple integral to find the volume of the solid

within the cylinder x^2 + y^2 = 9 and...

Question:

Use a triple integral to find the volume of the solid within the cylinder x 2 + y
2
= 9 and between the planes
z = 1 and x + z = 5.

Cylindrical Coordinates:

We can use a triple integral to find the volume of a region or solid and three-dimensional space. Recall that
cylindrical coordinates are the familiar polar coordinates with an extra variable that allows us to move in and
out of the plane. We label this new variable z, so that the relations between cylindrical and rectangular
coordinates are as follows:

x = r cos θ

y = r sin θ

z = z

2 2 2
r = x + y

y
−1
θ = tan
x

dV = r dz dr dθ

Answer and Explanation:

In cylindrical coordinates our cylinder is simply r ≤ 3 when θ ∈ [0, 2π]. We also know that 1 ≤ z ≤ 5 − x.
We write this upper bound instead as 5 − r cos θ, and you cylindrical coordinates to find that the volume of our
cylinder with the slanted top is
2π 3 5−r cos θ

V = ∫ ∫ ∫ r dz dr dθ
0 0 1

2π 3

= ∫ ∫ (5 − r cos θ − 1) r dr dθ
0 0

2π 3
2
= ∫ ∫ 4r − r cos θ dr dθ
0 0

Let's take a quick pause. We observe that since ∫ 0 , the second term vanishes completely. And
cos θ dθ = 0

so we are left with

2 3
2π 3
2
V = ∫ ∫ 4r − r cos θ dr dθ
0 0

2π 3

= ∫ ∫ 4r dr dθ
0 0

2π 3

= 4∫ dθ ∫ r dr
0 0

3
1
2
= 4 (2π) [ r ]
2
0

2
= 4π(3 )

= 36π ≈ 113.097
