1. CENTRAL BANK
The principal objective of the Bank is to promote and maintain monetary stability, an efficient
payments mechanism and the liquidity, solvency and proper functioning of a soundly based
monetary, credit and financial system in Botswana. Pursuant thereto, the Bank’s mission is to
promote and maintain a safe, stable, sound, efficient and competitive banking system.

2. COMMERCIAL BANKS
Commercial banks are entities licensed under the Banking Act (Cap. 46:04) to conduct banking
business. The Banking Act defines banking business as the acceptance of deposits of money
repayable on demand, after fixed periods or after notice, as the case may be, by cheque or
otherwise. Banking business also means the use of deposits in the making out or giving of loans,
advances, overdrafts or other similar facilities, and in undertaking investments or engaging in other
operations authorised by law or under customary banking practice, for the account of, and at the
risk of the person or persons accepting such deposits, and includes the discounting of commercial
paper, securities and other negotiable instruments, for the purpose of extending loans or other
credit facilities.

3. DEVELOPMENT FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Botswana Savings Bank is a government-owned bank established in 1992, through the Botswana
Savings Bank Act (Cap. 56:03) to mobilise domestic savings (deposit-taking), grant loans on
commercial terms and offer such other viable banking or financial services as it considers
necessary or desirable to meet future needs of the people of Botswana. The bank is also authorised
to act as an agent for the administration of funds other than the funds of the bank, on behalf of
individuals, organisations, government or other administrations.

Botswana Savings Bank operates three branches (Gaborone, Francistown and Railpark Mall) plus a
network of 124 post offices that are located in towns and villages throughout the country.

3.2 Botswana Development Corporation (BDC)
Botswana Development Corporation Limited was established in 1970 as the government’s main
financing agency for commercial and industrial development. The corporation’s main objective is
to assist in the establishment and development of commercially viable businesses in Botswana.
BDC provides a wide range of financial services, which include equity and loan financing.

3.4 National Development Bank
National Development Bank is a government-owned bank established in 1963 through the National
Development Bank Act (Cap. 74:05). The bank’s objective is to provide a varied range of financial
services to business ventures in the agricultural, commercial/tourism, manufacturing/industrial and
real estate sectors.

4. BUILDING SOCIETY
BBS Limited was established on April 26, 2018 under the Companies Act (Cap. 42:01), following
demutualisation of Botswana Building Society, which had been established in 1976 under the
Building Societies Act (Cap. 42:03). The principal objective of BBS Limited is to raise money by
issuing shares to its members and accepting deposits or providing loans to its members and
others. BBS Limited continues to give priority to providing mortgage.
