CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
Making a career choice is a defining phase in every student's life. Students have to consider
several factors before arriving at a decision. The purpose of this research was to see the factors
which affects the choice of career among students. understanding the factors that influence the
career choices of students is paramount. Among the various strands offered in senior high school,
Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) has gained prominence for its focus on
preparing students for the dynamic world of commerce and entrepreneurship. This research aims to
search into the multifaceted factors that shape the career decisions of these students, shedding light on
both personal and external influences. Ahmed et al. (2017) found that career choice is affected by the
level of financial resources (FIN). According to Reid (2017), family income is closely related to
students’ decision to choose a career by uncovering these determinants, educators and policymakers can
gain valuable insights to better support students in aligning their aspirations with their chosen career
paths, thus fostering their academic and professional success. According to the theory of vocational
development by Supeer (2005),
The influence of career choice has a lasting impact on an individual. It serves to be a predictor
and determinant of their prospective level of income, nature of work and consequently leaves a mark on
the personality, demeanor and outlook of an individual. Thus, one wrong decision can change
the fate of an individual. It is difficult for everyone to make a decision regarding their career. This
individual action is manifested on a larger scale in the economic prosperity of a nation.
Individuals who are misfits in their workplace tend to be less productive and efficient, and therefore,
they are unable to achieve their goals. The concept has been explained by Onyejiaku
(as cited in Jones Larke, 2005),
who defines occupation as a means of living, which has the power to change personalities, determine
social status, predict expected earnings, determine social groups etc. Thus, its importance cannot be
undermined. Given its complexity, it is then a point to ponder upon as to how
career decisions are made. These are elucidated by Ipaye (as cited in Alemu, 2013), who elaborates the
importance of dialogue with peers, sessions with college counsellors, and discussions with parents and
teachers on career selection as “career convention” or “career conference”. According to him “career
convention is an instrument of career information”
The students should first become aware of the need for a career. A student must take important and vital
decisions in the selection of a career which will determine his future success. The influence of career
choice has a lasting impact on an individual. It serves to be a predictor and determinant of there
prospective level of income, nature of work and consequently leave a mark on the personality,
demeanor and outlook of an individual. Thus, one wrong decision can change the fate of an individual.
1. Students: Research on factors affecting career choices directly impacts students by providing insights
into their motivations, interests, and influences. This knowledge can empower students to make
Informed decisions about their career paths and pursue opportunities that align with their goals and
aspirations.
2. Educators: Teachers, counselors, and other education professionals can use research findings to
develop tailored career guidance programs and curriculum interventions that address the specific needs
and preferences of students. This can improve student engagement, retention, and overall academic
success.
3. Parents and Families: Parents play a significant role in shaping their children's career choices.
Research helps parents understand the various factors influencing their children's decisions and equips
them with the knowledge to provide appropriate support and guidance throughout the decision-making
Process.
It is that in January 2013, the Philippines has 7.1% unemployment rate, the highest in the countries from
the Southeast Asian nations and from which, 16.9 % of which are college graduates [1]. Misfit
graduates are one of the considered reasons why the country has high unemployment and
underemployment rate. The reasons could be either that the produced course of graduate's misfits the
demand of the present economy, or the graduates do not pose the characteristics required by the
industries in need. This could be due to the wrong choice of course taken by most of the college students
brought about by unguided decision making in choosing courses. This is seen through reports that
mentioned that high percentage of unemployment and underemployment in the country is attributed to
the inadequacy of skills of some of the graduates and not meeting the competencies needed by
companies [2]. To be able to find ways to lessen misfit qualification of graduates to the needed
workforce of companies and institutions, the government, particularly the Department of Education
finds ways to elevate the quality of graduates before even reaching the collegiate level.
This is one of the reasons why the government implemented the K-12 program in the educational
System. For us to make a decision for our future and to make sure that the paths that were taking is the
right one for us. We chose this title because we know that there's some students who are struggling to
choose what courses they will take in college. We also choose this because we want to help the students
to know what the right course for them. Some students face a number of problems while choosing a
career.
Sometimes, the hurdles they face discourage them so much that they abandon their choice altogether.
Since
lack of professional guidance, lack of financial resources, and fear of failure, students face a number of
problems while choosing a career.
