Producing electricity from wind energy has many advantages. Firstly, it brings money into poor rural areas
around the country. It creates thousands of jobs for the local people. Wind energy is an easy crop for
farmers to sell. Farmers do not have to depend on water or sun to make money. Farmers can receive a lot of
money from farm renting. Secondly, wind power does not produce pollutants, so the costs for health care
also decrease. The American Lung Association is in favor of wind energy because it keeps the air clean and
free from pollution. They also launch a Healthy Air Campaign to promote the use of wind energy.
Wind energy also keeps energy bills down for the users. It is becoming more competitive with other types
of energy in terms of cost. Wind farms leave most of the farmer’s land free for other uses while providing a
steady income.

IV. Read the passage and choose the best option to answer each of the following questions.
These days, if you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight takes about 16 hours. You also have
to wait at the airport, and sometimes you have to transfer onto a different airplane. If you add all of that
extra time, the trip takes at least 20 hours. But in the future, the trip from New York to Beijing might only
take two hours.
Right now, a private company is developing something called ET3. ET3 stands for “evacuated tube
transport technology”. The capsules use electricity instead of gasoline. For international travel, they can
travel at about 6,500 kilometers per hour. That is much faster than airplane - most modern airplanes usually
only fly at about 800 kilometers per hour.
So how is this possible? How can these capsules travel so fast? The answer is that there is no air inside the
tube. When airplanes fly, they have to move through the air. The air slows the airplanes down. Because
there is no air in the ET3 tubes, the capsules are able to move at a very high speed. Besides, the capsules
are quite light. They only weigh 183 kilograms.

1. How long might it take from New York to Beijing in the future?
A. 16 B. 20 hours C. 2 hours D. 22 hours hours
