Example A balloon blown up with 1 mole of gas has a volume of 480mL at 5°C. The
balloon is filled to (7/8)th of its maximum capacity. Suggest,
a. Will the balloon burst at 30°C ?
b. The minimum temperature at which it will burst.
c. The pressure of gas inside the balloon at 5°C.
d. The pressure of gas when balloon bursts.
Example Calculate the density of CO2 at 100°C and 800 mm Hg pressure.
Example A spherical balloon of 21 cm diameter is to be filled up with H2 at NTP from
a cylinder containing the gas at 20 atm at 27°C. The cylinder can hold 2.82
litre of water at NTP. calculate the number of balloons that can be filled up.
Example A student forgot to add the reaction mixture to the round bottomed flask at
27°C but put it on the flame. After a lapse of time, he realised his mistake.
Using a pyrometer he found that the temperature of the flask his mistake.
Using a pyrometer he found that the temperature of the flask was 447°C.
What fraction of air would have expelled out?
Example An open flask contains air at 27°C. Calculate the temperature at which it
should be heater so that,

a. 1/3rd of air measured at 27°C escapes out.

b. 1/3rd of air measured at final temperature escapes out.
Example Two glass bulbs of equal volumes are connected by a narrow tube and filled
with a gas at 0°C and pressure of 76cm of Hg. One of the bulb is then
placed in a water bath maintained at 62°C. What is the new value of the
pressure inside the bulbs? The volume of the connecting tube is negligible.
A 10 cm column of air is trapped by a column of Hg, 8cm long is capillary tube
Example horizontally fixed as shown below at 1 atm pressure. Calculate the length of air column
when the tube is fixed at same temperature.
A. Vertically with open endup
B. Vertically with open end down.
C. At 45° from horizontal with open end up

10cm 8cm
Example One litre water in a bucket is placed in a closed dry air room having
dimensions 4 x 2 x 1.5 m3 at 300K. If the vapour pressure of water at 300k
is 27.0mm and density of water at 300K is 0.990 g cm-3, Calculate the
amount of water left in liquid state.
