Application Note - Using Extension and Adapter Cables with Power

Optimizers
Extension Cables
SolarEdge only allows the use of extension cables between a module and a Power Optimizer, between two modules connected to the
same Power Optimizer, or between two Power Optimizers, as specified in the cases below. Any other use case is not allowed.
AS0003-GND
Between a Power Optimizer and a module:
Extension cables of up to 6 ft / 1.8 m are allowed for all Power Optimizers (3 ft / 0.9 m for DC+, and 3 ft / 0.9 m for DC -).
S-Series Power Optimizers with the 1-type suffix in their part number (Sxxx-1xxxxxx or Sxxxx-1xxxxxx) - extension cables of up to
52 ft / 16 m can be installed per Power Optimizer (26 ft / 8 m for DC+, and 26 ft / 8 m for DC-).
SolarEdge Sense Connect technology monitors the S-Series Power Optimizer cable connectors and the direct connection created
between them and another connector.
P-Series Power Optimizers with the 4-type suffix in their part number (Pxxx-4xxxxxx) and the Mxxxx-Series - extension cables of
up to 52 ft / 16 m can be installed per Power Optimizer (26 ft / 8 m for DC+, and 26 ft / 8 m for DC-).
Systems with the Single phase inverter with Compact technology and an M2640 Power Optimizer - extension cables of up to 20
m can be installed (10 m for DC+ and 10 m for DC-).
Between two Power Optimizers or between a Power Optimizer and the inverter:
Extension cables can be installed between Power Optimizers only from row to row, around obstacles or pathways within a row
and from the end of the PV string to the inverter. The total length of the extension cables may not exceed the following values:

Single Phase Inverters Three Phase Inverters

SE17K and below - 300 m
SE17.5K and above - 700 m
All - 1000 ft / 300 m
SE9KUS, SE20KUS - 300 m / 1000 ft
SE14.4KUS, SE17.3KUS, SE33.3KUS, SE40KUS -700 m / 2300 ft
*The same rules apply for Synergy units of equivalent power ratings, that are part of the modular Synergy technology inverter.

S-Series Extension Cables

When performing a retrofit installation or an RMA replacement you may need to replace a P-Series Power Optimizer with a
compatible S-Series Power Optimizer in the same string. As the length of the output cables for each series is different, you may need
to use an extension cable to connect between the P-Series output cable and the S-Series output cable.
NOTE
For RMA purposes, SolarEdge provides the extension cable.
SolarEdge Sense Connect technology monitors the S-Series Power Optimizer cable connectors and the direct connection
created between them and another connector.

For P-Series Power Optimizers with output cables up to 1.6m in length, use the 1.5m extension cable.
For MC4 Connectors use one of the following kits:
OPT-EXT-MC4-1.5MX1 1x Cable KIT1.5m MC4
OPT-EXT-MC4-1.5MX5 5x Cable KIT1.5m MC4
OPT-EXT-MC4-2.5MX1 1x Cable KIT2.5m MC4
OPT-EXT-MC4-2.5MX5 5x Cable KIT2.5m MC4

Adapter Cables
Adapter cables may be used in combination with Power Optimizers. However, we suggest observing the following recommendations:
The adapter cable should be prepared by a reliable manufacturer/installer, using suitable tools according to the connector and
cable assembly instructions.
The maximum adapter cable length (including the connectors) should not exceed 1ft / 30 cm.
The adapter cable should meet all required regulatory and safety standards.
