Wires enter from the bottom of MCU as following picture:

3.4 Installation of Protective Data Capsule

PDC should be installed in the outer board of the ship near bridge, so that the possibility of survival and
callback is bigger. The installation position of PDC should apart from rigging and other potential impediment, and
be close to the ship’s central line as much as possible. Following cases should be considered at least when valuing
the best position:
⑴The distance is far enough to the oil or latent fire.
⑵It is separation of the things that may result in any mechanical damage.
⑶The environment should be suitable for the PDC work normally.
⑷Anybody can reach it and copy the data or maintain it.
⑸The diver or the robot will be salvaged easily. The area around the PDC should be free of obstacles.
⑹For the FPDC, when released from the container, it shouldn’t be blocked.

- 10 -
Headway VDR Installation Manual

3.4.1 Fastness of PDC

Weld the mounting base in a wide area close to central line on gyro board, and open a 30cm hole directly
behind the base (buttock direction). Weld the longer port of U pipe to hole area on board, and then cover rust-proof
lacquer and power lacquer after the welding.
①Connect PDC with installation bracket, and remove bolts to separate PDC from the bracket. Fasten the
bracket to the base with 4 sets of screws of M10×20.
② Install the PDC onto the bracket, and then fasten the bolts and envelope the label.

MOUNTING BRACKET FOR FIXED PDC

- 11 -
Headway VDR Installation Manual

3.4.2 Fastness of FPDC

The FPDC should, with greatest possibility, float-free and avoid being caught in railings, superstructure, etc.,
if the ship sinks.
The FPDC should be located so that it may be easily released manually and brought to the survival craft by
one person. It should therefore not be located in a radar mast or any other places which can only be reached by
vertical ladder.
Note: a float-free EPIRB may also be used to fulfill the requirements for one piece of equipment (of two),
which is capable of transmitting distress alert to shore from or near the navigation bridge of the ship. Under such
conditions the float-free EPIRB should fulfill the following additional requirements with regards to
location/installation:
The FPDC must be installed in the vicinity of the navigation bridge, i.e. on the wings of the navigation bridge.
A location on the top of the wheelhouse may be accepted to fulfill the requirement if accessible by stairs; or
It may be possible to activate the EPIRB remotely from the bridge. If remote activation is used, the EPIRB
should be installed so that it has unobstacted hemispherical line of sight to the satellite.
Note: It should be considered that the main force of the EPIRB is float-free activation. If the additional
requirements mentioned above can’t be met without reducing the reliability of the float-free activation, priority
should be given to this requirement. Alternatively, two float-free EPIRS should be installed.
The EPIRB should be equipped with a buoyant lanyard suitable for use as a tether to life craft etc. Such
buoyant lanyard should be arranged as to prevent its being trapped in the ship’s structure.
① Weld the mounting base to balustrade in the wide area of gyro board.
② Fasten the FPDC with four screws of M10×20 to mount base.
③ Open a hole on one side of the bridge door, and then weld the water tight head.
④ Lay the data transmission cables between MCU and PDC through water tight head. The cable layout stops
at FPDC installation area.
⑤ Connect the data transmission cables navigation plug with FPDC, and then install the FPDC into mounting
box. Cover it and insert the release implement pin.

4 Connection of Serial Interfaces to the VDR and Recording of Data

4.1 GPS
Please use RS232←→RS422 serial-port converter and one side of converter can be directly connected with 9
needle serial-port (Please install firstly Replay Software on your computer referring to Operation Manual. And then
install serial port debugging tool and set Baud rate before receiving serial port information. Please change Baud
rate as 4800 through software if GPS is general format. In fact, Baud rate of GPS, GyroCompass, SpeedLog is
4800, except that AIS’ Baud rate is 38400 as required in IEC61162-1). Firstly Multimeter is used to measure signal
voltage of GPS signal output. Attention: this is a DC change voltage with upper limit of around 3.5—11V, and
following AIS, GyroCompass, SpeedLog etc. are the same. The different is the equipment. If test voltage is within
the range, connect the two lines on the other side of serial-port converter with GPS signal output interface.

Standard sentence for GPS is: $GPZDA, $GPGLL.

$GPGLL,3900.8533,N,12141.0883,E,054523,A*2C.
$GPZDA,054523,18,05,2007,-8,0*61.
Please set GPS output format as NMEA0183 if you cannot find correct $ZDA word. Some GPS load is very
big because lots of equipment is connected with GPS signals. GPS may work abnormally if it is connected to VDR.
In this case, please add one signal distributor (amplifier). You also can contact our company or purchaser at local.
4.2 GyroCompass
Some Gyro Compasses have no standard output in NEA0183 format. But most vessels have installed AIS
before which needs connecting Gyro signals. Thus, a Gyrocompass converter module should have been installed
accordingly before for us to make use of. Gathering method is the same as AIS, GPS.

Standard sentence for Gyro Compass is: $HEHDT.

$HEHDT,161.7,T*2E.
There maybe also an exception: If there’s no GyroCompass converter module on board,
please contact our company for delivery or purchase it from local navigation companies.
4.3 SpeedLog
Connect to VDR directly as above to check if there’s standard NMEA0183 output from
Speed Log. However, there’s no standard NMEA0183 output for most vessels. We will offer a
converter module of SpeedLog, and connect it according to our reference manual. Meanwhile,
check whether the output signal that did not pass transformation is the standard NMEA 0183
format sentence by using COM debugging tool.

Standard sentence for Speed Log is: $VDVHW or $VDVBW.

If debugging is normal, connect our cable to the output interface of the converter with the other side to VDR.
4.4 Radar/ECDIS Image
The Radar/ECDIS Image Data must be gathered if Radar/ECDIS has standard interface, with the adoption of 5
cores 25m SKK VGA video cable, both ends of the cable have 15 holes VGA video cable plug. The both ends
respectively connect with vessel’s radar video output interface and the radar video input of VDR MCU. If vessel’s
Radar video output is BNC interface, just by way of BNC-VGA converter to convert; if DVI or HDMI interface,
just by way of DVI-VGA or HDMI-VGA converter to convert. Please connect MB directly if image interface is
LAN interface. Non-standard resolution rate & refresh rate of Radar output signal may be regarded as non-standard
signal output, which should be adjusted as standard output terminal by related radar manufacturers.

- 22 -
Headway VDR Installation Manual

Radar output interface & signals must meet the following requirements:
1) mode of output interface is: VGA, BNC, LAN.
2)The standard refers to display monitors with screen resolutions between 640×350 and 1280×1024, while
refresh rates between 60Hz and 85Hz and 1600×1200 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. As following picture:

4.5 AIS
Check whether the AIS signal format is correct through COM debugging window in
computer as did in 4.1——4.3.
(NOTE: Baud rate should be changed as 38400)
Standard sentence for AIS is:!AIVDO, !AIVDM.
!AIVDO,1,1,,,1:UAAb10018e1odFDgQ7;r:68000,0*70.
!AIVDM,1,1,,A,169E5dP0008dpQ<FC3;jt:48282T,0*64.
Then connect the cable to AIS signal output interface, and finish the gathering of AIS
signals.
4.6 ECHO SOUNDER
The ECHO SOUNDER data must be gathered when the VDR is installed. If it has the
standard signal interface when the VDR is installed, the data must be gathered, too.
Standard sentence for ECHO SOUNDER is: $SSDPT,28.0,3,100 or
$SSDBT,1.0,f,2.0,M,3.0,F.

- 23 -
Headway VDR Installation Manual

4.7 Autopilot
The autopilot shall be connected when the VDR is installed.
Standard sentence for autopilot is: $APHTD,A,0.0,R,H,N,35,4,2.5,3.5,0.0,5,H,T,A,A,A,85.
4.8 Main Alarm
The Main Alarm signals should be collected by the VDR. Usually there is no standard interface for main alarm,
thus the signals are sent to the RAU. And then the RAU sends the out the standard signals.
4.9 Engine Telegraph Propeller
The Engine Telegraph Propeller data is required by the VDR.
Standard sentence for it is: $RCETL, A, 03, 20, C, 0.
4.10 VHF Radio
We only need to connect the Main VHF although there are several VHFs on board (Make it
clear from seaman). Check VHF installation manual whether it has standard signal output
interface. If does, connect to VDR directly. Otherwise, use the VHF converter module in our
equipment cabinet. Check the drawing in converter module to connect it, with the other head
connect to VHF interface of VDR.

Note:
1 Other serial port signals may be set and debugged according to the operations
above.
2 Signals shall be processed and converted by PAU firstly if connected signals are non-serial
port signals.
signals are not serial port signals.
4.11 Connection of Remote Acquisition Unit
Please connect the digital and analog into the RAU, and it will output the standard signals to the MCU. The
power is 24VDC.

Please connect the analog to the Analog terminal and the digital to the Digital terminal.

- 24 -

Some vessels need more acquisition models. A main acquisition model must be chosen if these acquisition
models are parallel connection. The main unit SW DIP-4 switch settings must be “0000”, other Modules’
settings code must be exclusive. Otherwise, acquisition models are not able to work normally. Connect code
sequence and output of all the Sub-RAU in parallel to the MCU. If there is only one acquisition model, the settings
of SW DIP-4 needn’t be changed, and the default value is “0000”.

Note: “1” is low bit, “4” is high bit. (Please refer to later sheet)
