Lesson Community Participation: Definition

1 and Importance

What’s In

In this module, a seemingly very simple but sometimes or oftentimes neglected

human activity will be presented and discussed. If done correctly, it plays a crucial role
in the success of a lot of activities and programs of the government and non-
government organizations. If not strengthened or if we failed to tap it, it will usually
lead to the letdown of an activity be it a major one or even to the simplest community
work.

In the school settings, it is also a big factor in the success of the programs of
any educational institution. The involvement of the PTA and other school stakeholders
are the concrete proofs of the indispensability of this human endeavor.

This human activity is what we called community participation.

What’s New

It is safe to say that the success of any activity depends on the participation of
the community. As the popular adage goes “no man is an island”. It means that we
are not living solely in this planet. We are either a part or member of a family and live
in a community. With this reality, our participation in the family and community means
a lot and of paramount importance.

A Young Hero
by: Larry B. Tubalado

Theo is seemingly an ordinary student in one of the public schools

of Cagayan de Oro City. He is not even considered as one of the top
performing students if grade is the sole basis in assessing the worth of a
learner. But lo and behold, Theo’s name rings a bell in the different public
and private school campuses in the city and in nearby communities.

Why is Theo popular? His good heart is the main reason. In his
young age, he is already involved in various civic activities that promotes
social welfare. He is a member of various youth-oriented groups that give
seemingly simple services yet worthwhile in the lives of the target groups.

Every month of June, he’s a part of a diverse environment-related

activities. He’s a regular of the yearlong clean-up drive in the different
seaside communities of the city and the mangrove planting and growing in
the estuary part of Cagayan de Oro River.

He is also a youth volunteer teaching reading to the out of school

youths (OSY) congregated by a police precinct as part of their Mobile
Library Program.

In his own community, he is an active member-officer of their youth

organization. They are considered partner of the Homeowners
Association Officers responsible for the upkeep of the children’s
playground, beautification of the main street, participants of the yearly
container urban gardening and various Yuletide Season events and
competitions sponsored by the LGU or Local Government Unit of their
locality.

Why is Theo so active in these activities? It runs in the family.
