HISTORY OF DON JUAN FLORES AVALON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The first step toward the formation of DON JUAN FLORES AVALON NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL of San Roque, Northern Samar came on 1967, through the effort of the active Mayor Oscar
Avalon with the help of Mr. Lucio Ocenar, who was then the District Supervisor of San Roque, and
sponsored by Dr. Oreta, this secondary school was established and first named Lao-angan Barrio
High School.

On June 1968, the Lao-angan Barrio High School was opened and the first year operation
was spearheaded by the secondary school principal, Mrs. Colita P. Dela Cruz, under the supervision
of Mr. Lucio Ocenar, with two (2) full time teachers in the persons of Nicanor Morado and Miss
Teresita Bula-Fulgusino as the advisers of the 36 freshmen students and there were part time
teachers like Mr. Jose L. Niedo, Mrs. Norma T. Lim, Mr. Antonio Lipata and Mr. Felix Tilbe.
Subsequently, School Board was organized headed by the District Supervisor as the chairman. Few
months later, the next batch of teachers, Mrs. Rosario Espina, Mrs. Mansueta Calesar, Miss Luz Poso,
Mrs. Erlinda Tejero, and Mr. Pedro Tejero, cameto serve the institution.

Since the school is new, major problems were encountered such as lack of facilities, needs of
building and adverse financial condition for the salary of the teachers. Classes were conducted in
the old market tienda or sometimes under the citrus trees. The school during that time was
squatter of the elementary school. The tuition fee of the student was very low and not enough to
cater the needs of the teacher but despite of this, they served unselfishly and enthusiastically. Every
year, enrolment increased.

In 1975, Lao-angan Barrio High School changed its name and became Lao-angan Barangay
High School. In 1987, Lao-angan Barangay High School was named San Roque Municipal High
School under the administration of Mrs. Narcisa T. Caparoso as principal and Mrs. Colita P. Dela
Cruz as district supervisor.

As the years go by, the number of teachers increased to accommodate the rapid growing
population of enrolees. On October 23, 1990 through the assistance of Don Juan F. Avalon, the high
school becomes independent. An area of of 1,102 square meter which was located near the church
was donated for the total educational development of the youth of San Roque. At last, the dream of
San Roquenhon turns to reality. Dr. Jenny B. Abalon, who is now a professor of College of Science in
the University of Eastern Philippines headed the school.
Her administration tasted until 1994, within which those years number of teachers
increasedand demand of facilities were slowly established.

Year 1997, through the dynamic leadership of Mr. Julito E. Lagrimas, San Roque Municipal
High School became San Roque National High School. A year after, it became Don Juan Flores
Avalon National High School in honor of the donor.
