Notes
(a)
B1: Curve just in quadrant one and two with a gradient that is approaching zero at the lhs and increases as x
increases. Curves that just cross the y axis into quadrant 2 may be penalised. As a rule of thumb expect it
reach at least as far as x = -1.
B1: The point (0, 1/9) lies on the curve.
Accept 1/9 marked on the y axis. Accept a statement when x = 0, y = 1/9
Do not accept 3−2 or 0.11. Condone  0, 0.1

 
(b)
1
B1: For using × 0.5 or h = 0.5 or equivalent such as (1-0.5)
2
M1: Scored for the sight of the correct structure for the outer bracket.
You need to see the first y value plus the last y value plus 2 times a bracket containing the sum of the
remaining y values with no additional values.
If the only mistake is a copying error or is to omit one of the remaining y values then this may be regarded
as a slip and the M mark can be allowed (An extra repeated term forfeits the M mark however).

A1: { {
For 0.192 + 3 + 2 ( 0.333 + 0.577 + 1 + 1.732 )} or ( 0.192 + 3) + 2 ( 0.333 + 0.577 + 1 + 1.732 )} oe
A1: For answer which rounds to 2.62. Correct answer implies all 4 marks

NB: Separate trapezia may be used: B1 for 0.5, M1 for 1/2 h(a + b) used 4 or 5 times followed by A1 (if it is all
correct ) and A1 as before.

(a)
B1 Score for either
• a correct shape for the curve. It must lie only in quadrants 1 and 2 and have a positive and
increasing gradient from left to right. The gradient must be approximately 0 at the left hand end.
Condone the curve appearing to be a straight line on the rhs. See Practice/Qualification items for
clarification. Do not be concerned if it does not appear to be asymptotic to the x-axis at the LHS
• intercept at (0,1). Allow 1 being marked on the y - axis. Condone (1,0) on the correct axis.
B1 Fully correct. As a guide the gradient of the curve must appear to be 0 at the lh end and it must reach a
level that is more than half way below the level of the intercept at (0,1). Allow=x 0= , y 1 in the text, it
does not need to be on the sketch. Do not condone (1,0) even on the correct axis for this mark.
(b)
B1 For using a strip width of 2. This may appear in a trapezium rule as 12 × 2 or 1 or equivalent
M1 Scored for the correct {......} outer bracket structure. It needs to contain first y value plus last y value and
the inner bracket to be multiplied by 2 and to be the summation of the remaining y values in the table
with no additional values. If the only mistake is a copying error or is to omit one value from inner
bracket this may be regarded as a slip and the M mark can be allowed ( An extra repeated term forfeits
the M mark however). M0 if values used in brackets are x values instead of y values
A1 For the correct bracket {......}
A1 For awrt 26.56. Accept 425/16
NB: Separate trapezia may be used: B1 for h =1, M1 for 1/2 h(a + b) used 3 or 4 times (and A1 if it is all
correct ) Then A1 as before.
Note: As h =1 the expression 1 × (16 + 0.0625) + 2 ( 0.25 + 1 + 4 ) will scores B1 M1 A1 with awrt 26.56 scoring
the final A1.

1
Note that x − 3 x 2 = 0 ⇒ x 2 − 9 x = 0 ⇒ x = 9 is acceptable
Correct point. Coordinates not
( 0, 5 ) necessary and may be seen on the B1
diagram.

(4)
(b) x = 25 ⇒ 4 ( 25 ) − 25 + 5 = 20 − 25 + 5 = 0
1
2 Shows F’s x coordinate is 25. Need
B1
to see 4 ( 25 ) 2 evaluated as 4 × 5 or 20
1

So x-coordinate of F is 25
1
Note: This may be shown by solving 4 x − x + 5 =0 2

Example 1
1 1

(
4x 2 − x + 5 = 0 ⇒ x − 4x 2 − 5 = 0 ⇒ x 2 +1 x 2 − 5 = 0
1

)( 1

)
1 1
x − 5 = 0 ⇒ x = 5 ⇒ x = 25
2 2

Example 2
4 x − x + 5 = 0 ⇒ 4 x 2 = x − 5 ⇒ 16 x = ( x − 5 )
1 1 2
2

x 2 − 26 x + 25 = 0 ⇒ ( x − 25 )( x − 1) = 0 ⇒ x = 25
(In this case, ignore any reference to the other root provided x = 25 is obtained)

integration is seen. Can be awarded for the curve or their ± ( curve − line ) .
Award this mark even if mistakes have been made in ‘simplifying’ their
