Waterwheels in Mengkang Village


Mengkang Village in North Sulawesi has waterwheels to generate electricity for its
villagers. A waterwheel is a circular mechanical device that utilizes running water to
rotate the wheel. The waterwheels were placed in Molobaian River and Ongkak River.
As simple devices, the waterwheels consist of a wheel, a hub, and a set of paddles.
The flowing water moves paddles and eventually rotates the wheel. This rotation
transforms the energy from the moving water into rotational energy. This energy is
turned into electricity. To generate electricity, the waterwheels are equipped with
generators and regulators. Also, a wiring system is used to distribute the electricity to
54 villagers.
This micro hydropower system using waterwheels has operated since in Mengkang
Village. This sytem was initiated by the head of the village because the village did not
have any electicity access. The villagers then cooperated to build the micro hydropower
system and each household pays IDR15,000/per month for maintenance. With 15,000
kW generated from the waterwheels, villagers do not live in the dark and children can
study at night.
