From the President’s Desk

Dear Friends,
2023: Smart, Clean & Green
The power sector is a critical contributor to a
nation’s GDP reflecting the nation’s economic
development. The Electrical and Electronic
Manufacturing Industry’s turnover is worth
USD60 Bn with a production of USD32 Bn and
an average growth rate of 9% achieved in the
past 5 years.

In the last calendar year, the Government of India

in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and
industry bodies like IEEMA worked in favour of the
introduction of policies towards universal access
to affordable power, green energy initiatives,
sustainability goals, make-in-India initiatives and
the like to accelerate the transition to a smart,
clean and green energy system.

We witnessed a growth in demand, exceptional

progress in production and renewables, innovative

Dear Members,
2023 was a year of electrifying success and great strides for
the Electrical & Electronics Manufacturing Industry. As we head
close to the end of the year, we look at how 2023 panned
out for the sector and for IEEMA and the opportunities that lie
ahead of us in 2024. The energy sector witnessed a bullish
trajectory this year with the renewables revolution, significant
momentum addition in transmission infrastructure, innovative
financing models and policy support for favourable investment
climate. This dream sprint of the energy sector was driven and
facilitated by a powerful ecosystem of generation, consumption
and efficiency throughout the power supply chain; and will set
the pace for further development as we head into 2024.
Keeping pace with the sector, IEEMA also had a spectacular run
in 2023 with many new initiatives and milestones to its credit.
ELECRAMA 2023 at the start of the year was a remarkable
success beyond expectations. This year’s edition was the

Statistics And Data About Smart Metering

In line with the aforementioned policy provisions and
target of Ministry of Power to achieve 250 million
smart meters, different states are at different stages
for appointment of AMISPs for smart prepayment
deployment in the country.
As on today projects for ~ 227.8 million2 smart meter
has been sanctioned and are at different stages of
bidding. Out of which, Letter of Award has been given
for 91 million smart meters; price bid has been opened
for another 22 million smart meters; and contracts have
been signed for 32 million smart meters.
As on date, cumulatively ~ 7.4 million smart meters
have been commissioned in India. The commissioning
rate has ramped up to the level of 10,000 installations
per day.
However, with the current target of 250 million meters,
average per day commissioning needs to be ramped
up exponentially.
Also, to match the timelines for implementation,
seamless and timely supply of meters to AMISPs is a
key factor. With the current supply chain scenario of
components availability and the associated lead period
for electronic component supply, they need clear
visibility and firmness in terms of order booking. This
will help in managing the supply in terms of both cost
and timeline. The implementation must be supported
by appropriate consumer engagement and installation

Opening and closing the load switch seems to be an
obvious operation for the AMI. If the database of the

A third system we saw, gives the new status as the

able to execute the action with the disconnected meter
and saved the new status in the database before trying
to execute the action. This automatically results in data
inconsistency and holds a lot of potential for future
errors in the system. To operate this system properly
and to trust the information from the MDMS is not
possible. This is an installed design fault.

3) Timestamp difficulties
Sometimes it is required to use timestamps. Register
values are mostly linked to timestamps and log and
temper information. What part of the AMI is responsible
for these timestamps? By performing end-to-end tests,

Role of Technology
in Smart Metering
to Reform the Power Sector
Presenting VK Mishra’s exclusive and precise
technical article expounding technology's
contribution to smart metering and how it aids
transition to an era, where energy is not only
intelligently controlled but also optimally utilized.

The power sector faces numerous challenges,

like the growing demand, an aging
infrastructure, and the pressure to transition
to cleaner energy sources. Smart metering
addresses these challenges through remote
management and real time analytics. The
integration of innovative technologies into the
power grid is reshaping the arena of energy
distribution, consumption, sustainability
and promoting reliability, efficiency and
environmental aspects.
Data Accuracy and Analysis
Smart meters allow accurate and real-time
monitoring of energy consumption and
power usage patterns, helping utilities and
consumers make informed decisions about
supply and consumption.
Currently, smart sensors within smart meters
capture granular data on energy consumption,
voltage levels, power demand, theft data,
and power quality data, identifying grid
performance and providing a comprehensive
understanding of the power ecosystem. The
integration of large data analytics is offering
utilities actionable insights into consumer
behavior, grid performance, and predictive
maintenance.
Remote Control and Dynamic
Monitoring
Smart meter technologies (such as GPRS, RF,
NBIOT, and PLC) allow for remote accessibility
and control. Utilities can remotely read meters,
monitor grid performance, and manage
energy distribution.

Hydrogen has the highest energy per unit mass of any scale and long-term storage can be achieved through
fuel; however, its low-density results in a low energy underground storage in various geological structures
per unit volume. Therefore, the storage of hydrogen at like salt caverns, depleted oil and gas reservoirs, and
high volumetric density is considered a critical enabling aquifers. However, if the requirement is to store small
technology for the successful commercialization quantities and for a shorter duration, either liquified,
compressed or solid-state storage can be the choice.
Each of these methods

The newly developed perovskite solar cell boasts a
power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.6 per cent.
Impressively, the cell retained over 90 per cent of its
initial efficiency after 1,200 hours of operation at 65
degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit).
The research, spearheaded by Professor Zhu Zonglong
from City University of Hong Kong, in collaboration with
Li Zhongan from Huazhong University of Science and
Technology, was published on October 20 in the peer-
reviewed journal Science.

Future looks bright as new Chinese-

interfacial layer between the photoactive layer and the
renewable energy breakthrough anode of the solar cell.
Previous study found using self-assembled monolayers
(SAMs) as an interfacial layer generally raises the PCE
to above 25 per cent. However, with the monomolecular
structure, SAM is only 1-2nm thick and is easily
decomposed at high temperatures.
“We designed the SAM in a unique three-dimensional
structure and anchored it to a stable nickel oxide
film to enhance both thermal and chemical stability.
This development effectively boosts the cell’s lifetime
performance and energy conversion capabilities,” Zhu
said on Tuesday.
