Nowadays in most countries around the world significant part of population would know one of

three most spoken languages, which are English, Spanish and Mandarin. There is a strong concern
that minority languages will be displaced. To avoid that, people had started protection of their
languages. Some would argue, that we shouldn’t have so many different languages and it’s time to
erase all others and simplify people’s life. However, in my view, we must take steps to protect
minority languages, and safe our cultural heritage.

One possible approach would be for government to take out most popular languages from
educational system. This will solve the problem instantly. However, if government wants their
country to develop, people must communicate with other countries and nationalities.

A solution that suits the problem much better is to support cultural and educational activities. Fund
cultural and educational initiatives aimed at promoting minority culture. Cultural education activities
are not only about the language itself, but also about the broader cultural context. This approach
helps to preserve the traditions, customs and historical knowledge associated with the language.
This ensures that the language remains an integral part of society. This practice is already well
established. For example, Cultural Festivals where minorities can showcase their traditions and arts,
including the use of Latvian language in songs, dances and performances.

Of course, everything sounds easy when it’s theoretical, but we mustn’t give up. The protection of
minority languages is a long-term process and requires efforts on the part of both the government
and society. Respect for the linguistic diversity and cultural heritage of minorities is an important
aspect of creating a diverse society.
