3.0 – Specification
3.1 General
The AM-1928 Shipping-Storage is designed to transport and store the General Electric CF6-80A,
CF6-80A2, CF6-80A3, CF6-80C2, and CF6-80E1 engines in QEC configuration. A separate AM-
1928 configuration is required for each engine type. The Engine Handling System is compliant
with the applicable General Electric Purchase Performance Specifications. It is capable of being
shipped on the main deck of B747F Freighter Aircraft. The engine pins securely into place
quickly and easily. Bootstrapping capabilities for A300-600, A310-200, A310-300, A330, B747,
B767, and MD11 are incorporated into the stand. A document container is secured to the base for
all manuals and documents. An optional FADEC and oil tank storage container is available.
3.2 Mobility
The stand consists of a base and cradle weldment that is is easily separated, with the base
supported by four caster assemblies. Each caster assembly offers a 5-inch wide by 10-inch
diameter wheel for easy mobility and a weight capacity of 5000 pounds. Wheels, with shock
absorbing polyurethane tread, can be repositioned to configure the entire stand for air or truck
transport. Tow-bars stow on frame when not in use. Maximum towing speed for entire stand (with
engine) is 5 Km/h (3 MPH). Integral truck shipping shock mounts cushion truck shipping
vibrations and shocks.
CAUTION
Failure to unlock the lead casters (tow bar end) during towing of the
stand will result in flat spots being worn into the caster tread.

3.3 Design
The AM-1928 Cradle consists of a welded steel frame with removable engine ground handling
mounts compatible with the applicable CF6 Engine in QEC configuration. Tubular arms support
the engine handling mounts.
The AM-1928 Base consists of a welded steel frame with integral shock mounts to dampen
ground handling shocks and vibrations. Pins are provided to interface the base with the AM-1928
Cradle. Retractable shock absorbing casters are included with stand.
3.4 Fabrication and Finish
The stand is fabricated from structural steel shapes conforming to ASTM A500, A513, and A36
materials. All bolted connections use A325 structural bolts or SAE Grade 5 commercial hardware.
The unit is primed and painted with high-grade, Skydrol resistant, enamel, with the color being
optional. Pins and miscellaneous hardware are manufactured from corrosion resistant materials or
plated as required.

4.0 – Maintenance and Inspection
4.1 General
The life expectancy of this equipment can be extended indefinitely if it is properly maintained.
By design, there is only minimal periodic servicing required. Annual inspections for damage,
weld cracks, or corrosion are recommended. Prior to each use, this equipment should be inspected
for obvious signs of abuse or shipping damage. Any damage found should require complete
inspection of the affected area to ensure structural integrity is not compromised.
4.2 Cleaning and Painting
This equipment should be cleaned periodically with a soap and water solution and thoroughly
rinsed.
CAUTION
Re-lubricate Wheel Bearings, Rollers, and Ball Screw after cleaning
stand.
Damaged paint should be touched-up with Skydrol resistant, high-grade, enamel paint. Touch-up
paint is available upon request from AGSE. Superficial scratches are expected during normal
usage and will not affect function.
4.3 Scheduled Service
All casters and bearings should be lubricated every 90 days with the following extreme pressure
grease or equivalent grease:

Manufacturer Product
Mobil Oil Company Mobilplex E.P. #1
Texaco Oil Company Texaco E.P. #1
Gulf Oil Company Gulf Crown E.P. #1

5.0 – Operation
5.1 Engine Installation into Stand
Two engine support systems are typically required to replace an engine. One supports the
replacement engine, while the other supports the failed engine. This procedure is applicable to
installing the engine into the stand with an overhead engine hoisting sling. For bootstrapping the
engine into the stand refer to Section 5.3.
CAUTION
In this system, wide use is made of several sizes of stainless steel pins.
All pins are retained by a cable lanyard which terminates in a spring
safety clip. Stowage is provided for all pins when not engaged, either in
their normal position or nearby. Pins must always be stowed when not in
use. Failure to do so may cause tangling, breaking of the lanyards, and
loss of pins.
1) Inspect stand for obvious damage.
2) Suspend engine by means of a suitable lifting beam attached to the engine flight mounts or
hoisting points (H2-1, H2-2, H6-1, and H6-2).
3) Install the FWD ground handling mounts to the engine using the hardware provided. Install
the safety clips.
CAUTION
Minimal clearance exists between the engine and stand. The operator is
responsible to ensure the engine does not contact the stand. This may
require the removal or adjustment of engine components.
4) Position the stand (base and cradle) beneath the suspended engine.

WA R N I N G
Care must be taken when working near suspended loads. Personnel
should never stand beneath the suspended load.

Page 5.0

Rev G
5) Insert the AFT mounts into the engine and support by hand.
6) Lower the engine into the stand until the FWD mount alignment pins engage with the
receptacles provided on the cradle. Mounts may need to be guided by hand.
7) Continue to lower the engine until the AFT mount trunnion blocks engage with the saddles on
the cradle. This may require the trunnion length to be adjusted by rotating the threaded
trunnion.
CAUTION
The trunnions must be fully engaged into the receptacles on the LTP
case.

CAUTION
Do not adjust the trunnion length when the trunnion supports the engine
weight, as this may cause binding/galling of the threads.
8) Close and pin the AFT mount Clamp bar.
9) Continue to lower the engine until the FWD dork pin retaining holes are aligned and install
the safety pins. Install the safety clips.
10) Install the sway link to engine mount H3.
CAUTION
The sway link must be installed prior to rotating or transporting the
engine.
11) Remove the engine sling and associated hardware.

5.2 Storage Procedure
Note: #number denotes location as shown on illustration below.
1) Remove safety pin from FWD Mount at #1.
2) Remove FWD Mount and secure both ends at #3 (location depends on mount size).
4) Remove safety pin from middle of Tow Bar and telescope inward on each half. Stow at #4 by
latching one end over the hook and pinning the other.
5) To stow casters, remove safety pin and lift caster to approximately a 90 degree angle. Replace
safety pin at #6 to secure (4 places).
7) Be sure Clamp Bar at #7 is in the CLOSED position as indicated by the arrow
8) Working on side at a time, remove the safety pin from the FWD end of the brace arm at #8
and the safety pin from the AFT mount at #9.
9) Slide Brace Arm forward and down. Roll the brace arm 180 degrees and re-pin the AFT end
at #10 using the pin from the AFT mount (#9).
10) Secure the pin from #8 into the FWD end of the brace arm, #11.
11) While another person is supporting the AFT Support Frame, repeat the previous steps 8 thru
10 on the other side of the cradle.
12) Rotate the AFT Mount Brace forward until it is horizontal. Pin at #12 on both sides of the
cradle.
13) Remove safety pin from #13 from AFT Mount Support and rotate AFT Mount Support
forward until it is horizontal. Use the safety pin from #13 to secure the AFT mount support at
#14.

5.3 Engine Bootstrapping
This procedure is only a supplement to the air frame manufacturer's engine bootstrapping
procedures.
1) Install bootstrap adapters as shown in figures (use figures from sheets 5.4 thru 5.17)
2) Connect the bootstrap system to the cradle and remove all slack.
3) Remove the pins connecting the base and cradle.
4) Raise the engine and cradle.
5) Install engine.
5.3-1 Bootstrap Installation Procedure
To replace the old AM-1928 Bootstrap with the new one, you will first need to remove all of the
old bootstrap equipment off of the cradle assembly.
1) Do not throw away the AFT pulley beam assembly as it will be used in conjunction with the
new system.
2) Put into place the new bootstrap supports (2) on both sides of the cradle as illustrated.
3) Pin into place. Place AFT pulley-beam onto the bootstrap supports (2).
4) Pin into place. Install the two spacer brackets (5 and 6) into the pulley-beam to ensure that the
cable is not dislodged during operation of bootstrap. Spacer Bracket will be positioned
“upright” when located on the outboard pulley as illustrated (see next page).
7) Locate the FWD adapters in the same position as the old FWD adapters. Bolt into place. Unit
is now ready for operation.

5.5 Shipping and Transport
Long distance ground transport may be done by truck with the AM-1928 Cradle/Base assembly
securely constraining all engine motions. Long distance transport (with engine) is also possible
via aircraft in the main cargo bays of the B-747 and C130. In either case, be sure unit is securely
fastened thru the use of the tie-down rings provided on all four sides of the base. Do not fasten or
secure to the cradle structure as this will impede shock absorbing features designed into the unit.
Note that the casters are pinned in the “UP” position.

6.0 – SAFETY
6.1 Stress
Design stress safety factors are compliant with industry standards (ASME B30.9-1990).
6.2 General
Most accidents are the result of violating standard safety rules in operation or improper servicing
and maintenance of equipment.
Many safety features have been incorporated into the design to assist in safe operation of this
equipment. These items do not fool-proof the equipment nor do they replace the operator’s
responsibility to operate the equipment in a safe manner.

CAUTION
Any deficiency revealed through inspection must be reported to
supervisory personnel. A determination must be made prior to resuming
operation, as to whether the deficiency constitutes a safety hazard to
personnel or equipment.
It is the operator’s responsibility to report any deficiencies, unusual noises, or operating
conditions to supervisory personnel. It is also the responsibility of the user of this equipment to
discontinue use until they are assured that the deficiency has been corrected.
6.3 Prevention
A good preventative maintenance program should include periodic lubrication, adjustment, and
immediate correction of defects revealed through inspections. Preventive maintenance will not
only contribute to safe operation, but will also extend useful service life as well.

8.2 Combined CF6-80A and CF6-80C2 Engine Shipping System
The AM-1928-800 System is meant to have combined applications for both the CF6-80C2 and
CF6-80A engines with only a few necessary hardware location changes to make it adaptable to
both. FWD hardware location changes to make it adaptable to both. FWD and AFT mounts are
of the foremost concern to this adaptation.
FWD mounts require special fixtures (item #801 for the CF6-80A, item #213 for the CF6-80C2
and item #814 for the CF6-80C2 Bore Cool).
AFT mounts, unlike the FWD mounts, are adaptable to both engine types with a simple rotation
of each. No need to change to another fixture.
Left Hand AFT Mount (item #804) has two pins permanently located to ensure proper fit to either
engine. To make it adaptable to the other type of engine, simply lift the AFT Mount out of its
holding bracket and rotate it 180 degrees towards the center of the engine (away from you) and
place it up-side-down back into the holding bracket. The second pin will now be in place to accept
the other engine.
Right Hand AFT Mount (item #803) has one pin. To make it adaptable to the other type of engine,
simply lift the AFT Mount out of its holding bracket and rotate it 180 degrees towards the front
of the engine (clockwise or counter-clockwise) and place it up-side-down back into the holding
bracket. Once it has been adjusted inward, or outward (threaded pin w/ Lock Collars), to the
proper distance from center the same pin will now be in place to accept the other engine.

CAUTION
Be sure that all retaining cables (lanyards) are in place and that pins,
bolts and lock-collars are secure and snug after making the changes on
the cradle to except the other type of engine (whether the CF6-80C2 or
the CF6-80A).
On the following pages are the parts breakdown listings for this new cradle feature. All items not
listed in this section are listed in the previous parts section of this manual.

8.3-1 Optional FADEC and Oil Containers
The illustration below shows the general location of the optional FADEC unit and oil tank
containers as they are positioned within the base portion of the AM-1928 stand. These storage
containers are designed to transport and/or store the units with the corresponding engine from
which they came. Both containers are mounted towards the Aft end of the engine stand between
the Aft fork tube and Aft Cross-brace. Container covers seal tightly all-around and are totally
removable with ample clearance from the engine itself. Both the FADEC Unit and oil tank are
easily removable with the engine positioned within the AM-1928 engine stand. As optional
equipment, these containers may be ordered under the part numbers of AM-2389-3 (for the
FADEC Control Unit) and AM-2390-3 (for the Oil Tank).

10.0 – Recommended Spares
10.1 Terms
Normal lead time for most items is eight (8) weeks ARO (subject to review at time order is
placed), FOB point is our factory in Santa Fe Springs, California. Standard terms are net twenty
(20) days. Any prices given are valid for thirty (30) days from date of issuance. Prices do not
include any local, state, or federal taxes.
10.2 Critical Items
AGSE defines “critical” items as those items, if broken or missing, that would render the
equipment inoperable or severely impair equipment operation. Since most of these items are also
long leads, it is AGSE’s recommendation that such items be identified, purchased, and stocked by
the customer. In the remote event of “critical” item failure, the equipment can be quickly repaired
and placed back in service with minimal down time.
AGSE does not typically stock all components used with the equipment, so immediate shipment
of “critical” items may not always be possible. AGSE will respond to customer requests for
quotation on any spare parts, and expedite orders for spare parts as required. The customer should
never assume immediate delivery is always possible.
It is the responsibility of the operator of the equipment to review the recommended spares list and
balance costs against equipment down-time. The list can be adjusted by the operator based on the
actual service life of components experienced during equipment usage.
