Question 1

Thembi is planning to host a surprise birthday party for her mother. She decided to make
Red Velvet Cake she saw on the internet. In order to buy the ingredients she had to first
convert the old traditional units into the now common metric units. You may use the tables
below as well as the given information to assist Thembi.

Ingredients

1 cup vegetable shortening

2 eggs
112 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cocoa powder
2 ounces red food coloring
212 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vinegar
White frosting, recipe follows Frosting: Over medium heat, cook the flour
and milk until thickened. Let cool. In the
White Frosting: bowl of an electrical mixer, cream together
2 tablespoons flour the butter, sugar and vanilla until light and
fluffy. Beat in the flour mixture.
1 cup milk
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup confectioners` sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In the bowl of a mixer, cream together the shortening, eggs and sugar.
In a separate small bowl, mix together the cocoa and food colouring
Add the paste to the shortening mixture. Sift the flour and salt together over parchment. Add
to the batter alternatively with the buttermilk in 3 additions. Add vanilla extract. Fold in the
baking soda and vinegar. Pour the butter into 2 greased 9 inch cake pans. Bake for 30 minutes
or until an inserted cake tester comes out clean. Let cool on a cooling rack. Invert the cakes
from the pans.

Use the above information to answer the following questions

1.1 1.1.1 Calculate the number kg of cake flour needed to bake this cake (4)
1.1.2 Calculate the total kg of sugar needed to bake the cake (4)
1.1.3 Given that 1 teaspoon = 2,5ml, calculate the number of grams of salt required
(3)
for this recipe.

1.2 Most of the ingredients that are needed are at home except for cake flour, unsalted
butter and vanilla extract. Calculate the cost effective for these items, if
● 500g pack of cake flour costs R 25,95
● 100g pack of unsalted butter R 5,75 (5)
● 50ml bottle of vanilla extract R 22,50 (1 teaspoon = 2,5ml )
(NB: You cannot buy fractional quantities in a shop)

1.3 At home a modern stove calibrated in degrees Celsius is used. Convert the
temperature from Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius: (3)
USE:

1.4 Since this must be a surprise, she plans to rush from school on Thursday the 13th
and get home at 15:45hrs and start preparing and baking the cake before her mother
arrives from work at 17:05hrs. Mixing ingredients may take approximately
(4)
35minutes and frosting may take 20 minutes. Verify whether she will be able to
make this cake and hide it before her mother arrives. Assume that all the necessary
ingredients are already there. Show all necessary calculations.

Question 2
2.1
Sange is building a cottage in his backyard. The plan drawer has drawn the plan but asked
Sange to sketch the elevation. Sange managed to sketch the West elevation as shown
below

Use the information above to answer the following questions.

2.1.1 When Sange enters this cottage, state the room he will be entering. (2)
2.1.2 Write down the number of entrances to this flat. (2)
2.1.3 Determine the number of sinks found in this flat. (2)
2.1.4 Describe how the bedroom door will open when Sange is leaving the
(2)
bedroom.
2.1.5 Name the features shown in the bathroom. (2)
2.1.6 State the number of windows on the west elevation.
(2)
2.1.7 Mention the room that will receive sunlight in the morning. (2)

2.2
Jeffrey's Bay has one of the largest wind farms, producing renewable energy, in
South Africa. The map below shows part of the Eastern Cape. Use the map to
answer the questions that follow.

2.2.1 Name the National Park closest to Jeffrey's bay. (2)

2.2.2 The actual distance from Grahamstown to Colchester is 89 km. Determine
the scale used on the map to the nearest hundred thousand. (4)

2.2.3 Steven travels 183 km from port Elizabeth via Jeffrey’s bay to Stormsrivier
to visit a friend. He departs at 09:02 am and arrives at 10:54 am. The
speedometer in his car shows an average speed of 108km/h. Verify by
(4)
calculation whether his speedometer was working properly.
You may use the following formula.
Distance = Speed x Time

Question 3
Mr. Masondo is a farmer in Vumankala. He sells milk. The milk is stored in cylindrical and
spherical containers that are sold to customers in 2ℓ, 5ℓ, 10ℓ, 20ℓ, and 25ℓ.

PICTURES OF MILK CONTAINERS

Cylindrical container Spherical container

radius(r) = 73,5cm

Height of cylindrical = 770 mm

The following formula may be used:

Volume of cylinder = 3,142 × (radius)2 × height

Volume of a sphere = 4 × 3,142 × r2
Surface area of sphere =4 × 3,142 × r2
Note: 1ℓ = 1 000 cm3

Use the information above to answer the questions that follow

3.1 Convert 770mm to meters. (2)

3.2 Determine the diameter of the spherical milk container. (2)
3.3 Define the term capacity using the given context. (2)

3.4 Calculate the volume (in cm3) of the spherical container. (2)
3.5 The capacity of the cylindrical container is 60ℓ. Determine the diameter of the
(6)
container. Round off your answer to the nearest centimetre.

Question 4

Mr Masondo makes rectangular water trouphs for his farm animals using concrete that is 5 cm thick.
The diagram below shows the external dimensions of a rectangular trough with an open top.

DIAGRAM OF A WATER TROUGH

 The external dimensions of the water trough are 300 cm by 190 cm by 160 cm

Source: www.google.com/images-cheggs/

Use the diagram and the information above to answer the questions that follow.

4.1 Calculate the internal dimensions of the trough in centimetres. (3)

4.2 Hence, show by calculations that the internal volume (capacity) of the trough is
8 091 000 cm3.
(2)
You may use the formula:
Volume = l × w × h
4.3
Given that 1 gallon of paint covers approximately 280 000 cm2. Mr. Masondo
claimed that
3 litres of paint will be enough to paint the internal surface of the trough. Verify,
using calculations if his claim is correct. (6)
You may use the formula:
Surface area of a rectangle = (l × w) +2(l×h) +2(w×h)
NOTE: 1 gallon = 3,785ℓ

QUESTION 5

Impilo High School plans to build a new L-

shaped school hall. The floor of the school
hall will be tiled using blue and grey tiles.

A rectangular stage will be located against

one wall of the hall. The sketch alongside
shows a possible layout plan of the hall.

The width of the stage is 5 m, and the length

is 10 m. The stage is NOT going to be tiled.

The size of a square tile is 50 cm by 50 cm.

The school has a budget of R30 000 for the

tiles.
Use the information above to answer the following questions.
5.1 A scale drawing of 1: 300 is made of the hall.
(3)
Determine, in mm, the length of the north-facing wall of the hall on the scale drawing.
5.2 Critique the layout of this school hall regarding the location of the stage and give a solution for
your critique. (3)

5.3 Calculate the total area of the floor that has to be tiled.
You may use the formula: Area of a rectangle = length × width (6)

5.4 The tiler requests a purchase of 5% more than the required tiles to allow for cutting and
breakages. (7)
Calculate the total number of tiles to be purchased.
5.5 The ratio of blue tiles to grey tiles needed is 4 : 1 to make the pattern as illustrated alongside.
Blue tiles are sold in boxes of 10 at a cost of R250 per box
while the grey tiles are 16 in a box and cost R864 per box.
(9)
Verify if the budget is sufficient for the tiles.
