LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Math 5 – Problem Solving (Fractions}

I. Introduction
Solving problems are classified into two: routine and non-routine. Routine
problem is a problem where there is an immediate solution. A non-routine
problem on the other hand, is a complex problem that do not have
immediately apparent strategy for solving them.

In this Learning Activity Sheet different activities are provided, hoping that
you will find out for yourself that Mathematics is not difficult as some learners
think it is. Enjoy learning!

II. Learning Competency

This Learning Activity Sheets was designed and written with you in mind. It
is here to help you solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition
and/ or subtraction of fractions using appropriate problem-solving strategies
and tools.

III. Objectives

After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. Solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition and/or

subtraction of fractions using appropriate problem-solving strategies
and tools.
2. Write the number sentence correctly.
3. demonstrate perseverance in doing things.

IV.Discussion

Problem:
Justine bakes an apple cake for her mother’s birthday.
His brother ate 3/5 while her sister ate 2/4. Who ate more?
How much more?

To solve the problem.

Follow the Steps in Solving Word Problem

Understand
Know what is asked in the problem? Who ate more? By how much?
Know the given facts, 3/5 and 2/4

Plan: Determine the operation to use. Subtraction

Draw a picture to represent the problem.

3/5=12/20

2/4= 10/20

Solve: Think of the solution to the problem

For the first question. By comparing the size, 3/5 is larger than 2/4.
For the second question: Looking at the illustration,
3/5=12/20 and 2/4=10/20
12/20- 10/20= 2/20 or 1/10
Check and look back: Looking at the illustration, 3/5 is bigger than 2/4
12/20 is 2/20 more than 10/20

Answer: Justine’s brother ate more by 2/20 or 1/10 part.

Another example:

During school days, the Caragan festival dancers’ practice 2 ½ hours in

the afternoon, On Saturdays, they practice 4 ¾ hours. How much longer
do they practice on Saturdays than on school days?

2
Know
What is asked?
How much longer do they practice on
Saturdays than on school days?

What is/are given? They practice 2 ½ hours in the afternoon and

4 ¾ on Saturdays

How do you solve the problem?

Look at the fractional parts of the mixed number they are unlike, you need to
change them first.

Recall that to change fractions to similar fractions, you get the LCD. Then
divide by each denominator in turn and multiply the quotient
by the numerator

The LCM of 2 and 4 is 4. Use 4 as the LCD.

Thus,
3 3
44 = 4 4 4 ÷ 4=1,1 x 3 = 3
1 2
22 = 2 4
4 ÷ 2 = 2, 2 x 1 = 2
1
2
4

1
The dancers practice 2 4 hours longer on Saturdays than on school days.

Other example: Subtract 4
𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 2 3.

STEP 1: Align the fractions and compare the denominators.

STEP 2: Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD). Rename the given
as similar fractions.

By using rectangular bars, we can show that 2 3 = 2 12.

STEP 3: Write equivalent fractions.

− = −
4 12

STEP 4: Subtract the numerators. Write the difference over the

common denominator.
