MELC: Adds and subtracts simple similar fractions and mixed numbers without or with regrouping.
MNS-1a-86
Activity 1
I. Objective: Add/Subract similar fractions in simple and mixed form with or without regrouping.
II. Presentation:
A. Here’s how to add and subtract similar fractions.
> Simply add or subtract the numerator.
> Copy the common denominator
> Express the answer in lowest term, if necessary
Ex. 1. 2 + 3 = 5 2. 3 - 1 = 2 or 1
6 6 6 4 4 4 2
B. Here’s how to add and subtract mixed fraction with the same denominator.
1. Add the whole number.
2. Simply add or subtract the numerator.
3. Copy the common denominator
4. Express the answer in lowest term, if necessary
Ex. 1. 2.

3. 4.
III. Exercises: Add or subtract the following. Reduce the answer in simplest form, if necessary.
A. Write the fraction in equation form.
1. Ronald was able to paint 3 / 8 of the roof while Nardo was able to paint 1 / 8 of the roof. What part of the
roof was already painted?
2. A jug contained 7 / 9 gallons of water. If Ben used 4 / 9 gallons of the water, how much water is left in the
jug?
B. Show your solution.
3. 5 3/12 + 4/12 + 6/12=
4. 2/6 + 3/6 - 4/6=
5. 6 8/16 - 3 7/16=
IV. Output/Task/Project 1/2 1/4
Complete the figures. Add across. Subtract down. 1/8 1/8

Activity 2
I. Objective: Add/Subtract dissimilar fractions in simple and mixed form with or without regrouping.
II. Presentation:
A. How to add and subtract dissimilar fraction.
> Find the least common denominator (LCD) using the LCM of the denominators.
> Get the equivalent fractions using this denominator?
> Add or subtract the numerators. Then write the sum or difference over the common denominator.
> Simplify or write the answer in lowest terms if possible.
Ex. A. 1 + 2 = 1. LCM: denominator 2- 2, 4, 6,8,10 LCD is 10
2 5 denominator 5- 5, 10
2. 1 X 5 = 5 + 2 X 2 = 4
2 5 10 5 2 10
3. 1 + 2 = 5 + 4 = 5 + 4 = 9
2 5 10 10 10 10
Therefore, the sum of ½ and 2/5 is 9/10

Ex. B. 1. LCM: denominator 4- 4,8,12 LCD is 12

denominator 3- 3, 6,9,12
2. 6 2_ X 4 = 8 - 2 1 X 3 = 3 =
3 4 12 4 3 12
3. 6 2 - 2 1 = (6 – 2) 8 - 3 = 4 8 - 3 = 4 5
3 4 12 12 12 12 12

Therefore, the difference of is 4 and 5/12.

III. Exercises: Add or subtract the following. Reduce the answer in simplest form if necessary.
A. Note: You can draw to illustrate your answer or write an equation and show your solution.
1. Camille is going to SM North EDSA. She travels 3 1/5 km riding in a jeepney and 1/6 km walking. How
many km did she travel going to SM North Edsa?
2. Dan owns 5 / 7 hectares of land. He planted vegetables in 1 / 3 hectares. How much land was left
uncultivated?
B. Show your solution. 4. 4 2/4 + 1 1/6
3. 1/3 - 1/5 5. 2 3/7 + 1/3
IV. Output/Task/Project: Subtract the sum of: 2 12/15 and 4/5 from 8 3/5 and 2/10
Activity 3:
I. Objective: Solves routine and non-routine problem involving addition and/or subtraction of fractions using
appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.MNS-1a-87.3
II. Presentation:
The steps in solving word problems: >What operation will be used?
>What is asked? >What is the number sentence?
>What are given? >Complete answer
Example: Solve the problem. Follow the steps in solving word problems.
Problem: Adela spends her free time in reading novels. Each day she spends ¾ hour. A friend came in and she has
already read by 2/3 hour. To complete her schedule, how much longer does she need to read?
1. Time that Adela needs to read.
2. Subtraction
3. 3 - 2 = N
4 3
4. Get the LCD of 4 and 3 which is 12
Solution: . 3 X 3 = 9 - 2 X 4 = 8 = 9 – 8 = 1
4 3 12 3 4 12 12 12
Therefore, Adela needs 1/12 more hour to complete her schedule in reading novel for each day.
III. Activities: Read and solve the following problems. Follow the steps in solving word problems.
1. Last week, Roy worked in his backyard garden. If he worked 4 1/3 hours on Saturday and 3 ¾ hours on
Sunday, how many hours did he work in two days?
2. In a Science experiment, Carla observes that a bean sprout has grown 1 ¼ cm taller. If the height of the
bean sprout was 4 3/10 cm in the last observation, what is its height now?
IV. Output/Task/Project: Read and solve the problem. Follow the steps in solving word problem.
1. Roy, Andrei and James weigh 147 ½ kgs. If Roy is the heaviest and Andrei is the lightest, what could be the
weight of the 3 boys? Give at least 3 combinations of answers like the example below.
ROY (Heaviest) JAMES ANDREI (Lightest)
50 ¼ kgs 50kgs 47 1/2 kgs
