Appreciate time spent with love ones
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Adding Fractions and Mixed Fractions without Regrouping
B. References: MELCs M5MNS-le-84
C. Materials: flashcards, show-me-board, activity sheets, felt tip pen, PPT
D. Value: Showing love to grandparents
III. PROCEDURE
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Daily Routine
2. Drill: Read and Identify the following fractions according to its
kind.
1. 10 3/5 4. 20/5
2. 10/12 5. 3/4
3. 8/2
3. Review: Add the following similar fractions
2/4 + 3/4 =
5/8 + 4/8 =
4/5 + 1/5 =
1/6 + 2/6 =
B. Developmental Activities
1. A. Motivation
Ask the pupils.
Who among you have their grandparents at home?
What did you do to show your love to you them?
How about those pupils having grandparents living faraway?
How did you show your love to your grandparents?
 Why is it important to remember our grandparents?
B. Presentation
Read the selection below.

“A Visit to Remember”

Elie and Jene rode to their grandparent’s house to visit them. It

took them 2/4 of an hour to get there and 1 1/3 hours to got back
home. How much time did they spend in going both ways?

 How did Elie and Jene show their love to their grandparents?
 How many hour did they take to get there?
 How many hours did they get back?
 How do you obtain the answer to the problem? What
operation do you use?
 What are the steps in adding fractions?

2. Analysis/Discussion

To add dissimilar fractions, follow these steps:

Given : 2/4 + 1 1/3 = ___

Step 1. Determine the Least 2/4 + 1 1/3 = /12 + /12

Common Denominator (LCD)
Multiples of 4: 4,8, 12

Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12

The LCD of 4 and 3 is 12.

Step 2. Get the equivalent 2/4 x 3/3 +1 1/3 x 4/4 = 6/12+1 4/12
fractions.
Increase each fraction to higher
terms so that the denominator of
each is 12.

Step 3. Add the numerators 6/12 + 1 4/12 = 1 10 /12

and copy the common
denominator. If the fractions
are in mixed form, add the
whole numbers.

Step 4. Reduce the answer to 1 10/12 = 1 5/6

its simplest form if possible.
In this case, 1 5/6 is in its simplest
form.

3. Activity
Answer the following.
A. Solve the following showing the solution
1. 3 1/10 + 4/5= _________
2. Alvine goes to the Cainta gym 3 times a week. On the
first day, he spent 1 ½ hours, on the second day, 1
1/4
hours, and 1/5 hour on third day. How many hours did
he spend in the Cainta gym for the whole week?

4. Abstraction
 What are the rules/steps in adding fractions and mixed
numbers without regrouping? Explain.
Adding Fractions and Mixed Fractions with Different Denominators

Step 1: Determine the Least Common Denominator (LCD).

Step 2: Get the equivalent fractions using this denominator.

Step 3: Add the whole numbers then the fractional parts (write the
sum of numerators over the common denominator).

Step 4: Reduce the answer to its simplest form whenever possible.

5. Application
Group the class into three. Let them answer the activity.
Follow the rubrics as guide to answer the group activity.
Indicators
Answer correctly the word problem.
Follow properly the steps in adding fraction
All members of the group work cooperatively
Observe proper behavior
Finish the activity on a given time
Points
5 - If all indicators were met
4 - If 4 indicators were met
3 - If 3 indicators were met
2 - If 2 indicators were met
1 - If 1 indicator was met

Group 1: If Percy and Celia took 1/5 of an hour to get there and 1 ¾
hours to get back home, how much time did they spend in going
back and forth?
Group 2: Mrs. Lopez bought 3 2/8 kg of mangoes. She also bought
1 ½ kg of lanzones in the fruit stand. How many kilograms of fruits
did Mrs. Lopez buy?
Group 3: Alm Aziz has 1 1/10 meters of red ribbon, Ar Eziz has 2
3/5 meters of blue ribbon and Jad Eziz has 1 1/5 meters of ribbon.
How many meters of ribbon did they have in all to decorate the
wedding.

IV. EVALUATION
Directions: A. Add the following and express the answer to its simplest
form.
1. 6 2/7 + 1/3 = ____________
2. 3/8 + 10 1/12 + 4/16 = ___________
B. Solve the word problem.
3. Ivy wraps her 2 gifts for her favorite teacher in Malbros
Elementary School. One gift used 2/7 meter of
wrapper and 1 2/3 meters for the other one. How much
wrapper was used in all? _____________________

V. ASSIGNMENT
Add the following fractions and express the answer to its simplest
form.
1. 5/20 + 4/8 + 2/5 =
2. 1/12 + 3/9 + 2 4/6 =

3. Thomas helped in doing the household chores. He spent 4/5 of

an hour scrubbing the floor, 1/2 of an hour washing the
dishes and 3/4 of an hour watering the plants. How long
did it take him to do all the task?

To add fractions and mixed forms, first rename the

fractions into similar fractions by finding the least common

denominator (LCD). Add the numerators and write the sum

over the common denominator. Add the whole numbers if there

are any. Express the answer in simplest form, if possible.
