5. 10/40 and 8/40
g. Motivation
Do you want candies?
I have here candies. You`re going to make fractions using candies. I will call someone
to write the fraction he/she made using the candies.
IV. PROCEDURES
a. Lesson Proper
Using the candies and the fractions the students made. The teacher will choose 2 students
to present their fractions on the board. Using the 2 different fractions the students made,
the teacher will show how to add 2 similar fractions using the candies. The teacher will call
different students.

Do you know how to prepare dalandan juice?

Valuing: What are the effects of drinking dalandan juice to our health?
(Let pupils share their ideas)

1. I have here problem.

Steven prepared dalandan juice for his daughter. He mixed 1/5 cup of dalandan juice and
3/5 cup of water. How many cups of liquid did he mix in all?
2. Give the pupils some time to analyze the problem, then ask the class the following
guided questions:
a. What is asked?
b. How will you solve the problem?
c. What operation should be used?
d. What kind of fractions are 1/5 and 3/5?
e. How do we add fractions with the same denominator?
Let the pupils give their answers.
3. Show in the class the presentation of 1/5 and 3/5 using bar models. Explain to the
class. That if the denominator of two fractions is the same, then the fractions are similar.
4. Explain that adding fractions is just like adding whole numbers. Give them a couple
of minutes to write the mathematical sentence and answer to the problem. Have a pupil
show his/her solution on the board and explain his/her answer. The answer should be 4/5
cup of liquid. The teacher should note that the two fractions are similar fractions because
they have the same denominator.
5. Give more examples of similar fractions.
1. 4/7 + 2/7
2. 8/15 + 4/15
3. 4/11 + 5/11
4. 12/21 + 11/21
5. 3/8 + 5/8
6. Give examples of Dissimilar Fractions
1. ¼+½
2. 4/5 + 2/8
3. 7/9 + 1/3
4. 9/10 + 1/20
5. 4/5 + 1/10
7. Give examples of Mixed Numbers with same denominator.
1. 3 2/5 + 2 1/5
2. 4 3/10 + 3 7/10
3. 1 10/11 + 2 3/11
I have here another problem.
Julie has 1 1/3 kilograms of chicken and 5 ½ kilograms of beef in her refrigerator. How
much kilogram of meat does she have in all?
Give 2 more examples
1. 2¾+3½
2. 3 5/8 + 1 ¾

1. 5/6 + 1/3
2. ¼ + 5/7
3. 3 1/3 + 8 ¾
4. 2 1/5 + 4 3/10
5. 11/22 + 1/22

B. Solve the problem.

he buy?
c. GENERALIZATION
