Learning Experiences (5 Es)

1. Engage A. Drill: Using Show –me Board, let the learners change the following improper fractions to mixed
(15 numbers.
minutes) a. 12/5 c. 13/7
b. 9/4 d. 21/4
B. Skill Preparation: Show pictures of a boy and a girl who were sweating.

1. Say: Jade and Jude were exposing themselves under the heat of the sun and they were very thirsty.
Father prepared calamansi juice for them to overcome their thirst. He mixed 1/10 cup of calamansi juice
and 8/10 cup of water. How many cups of liquid did father mix in all?
2.Call a volunteer to show how to mix the ingredients. After mixing, ask the pupils how many cups of
liquid did he mix in all? 9/10 cups
3. Ask:
a. Who prepared the calamansi juice? father
b. At home, who usually prepares juices for the family? mother
c. Does your father and mother take turns in preparing juices? Why? Why not?
Note to the teacher:
Deepen GAD concepts after asking those questions.
d. What kind of mixture did father make?
Note to the teacher :
1. Recall the different types of mixture in SCIENCE such as homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
2. Guide the learners to share other examples of mixtures that they do at home
e. Why did he prepare calamansi juice for them?
Note to the teacher: Discuss the HEALTH benefits of drinking calamansi juice.
f. If you were Jade and Jude, what should you do to protect yourselves under the heat of the sun?
How would you prevent heat stroke?
Note to the teacher: Emphasize DRRE
2. Explore A. Development of the Skill:
(10 minutes) 1. Provide each group Tiered Activities on Adding Similar Fractions and Mixed Numbers. Let each group
solve the problem using the materials provided in each envelope.
Group 1: Not Ready (sheets of paper and pair of scissors)
Find the sum using strips of paper in illustrating the given fractions.

It took 3/6 minutes for father to slice the calamansi. He was able to mix the juice, with water and
sugar for 4/6 minutes. How many minutes did father prepare the juice?

Expected Answer:

1|Page
3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6 or 1 1/6

Group 2: Just ready (graphing paper, colored pens)

Solve the following by coloring a bar graph on your graphing paper in illustrating the given fractions.

Father has 2/5 kg of sugar. He bought 1 3/5 kg more for his calamansi juice. How many kg of sugar
does he have in all?

Expected answer:

2/5 + 1 3/5 = 1 5/5 or 2

Group 3 : Ready to go beyond (Number line, colored pens)

Draw a number line to illustrate the given fractions in order to get the sum.

Mother jogs 2/5 km and father jogs 1 4/5 km every Sunday. How far did they jog in all?

Expected answer

2/5 + 1 4/5 = 11/5 or 2 1/5

Note to the teacher:
Let a representative of each group shares how the group gets their answers and guide them to give
emphasis on the algorithm they wrote under each representation of the fraction.
3. Explain 1. Ask:
(10 minutes) a. How did you find the activity? (enjoyable, interesting, challenging)
b. How did your group come up with your answers? (by cooperating, helping each other)
c. What kind of fractions did you add? (similar fractions, mixed fractions with similar fractions)
d. How did you add similar fractions? (To add similar fractions, add the numerators then copy the
denominator. Reduce the answer to lowest term whenever possible)
e. How did you add mixed fractions with similar denominators?
(To add mixed fractions with similar fractions, add the fractional parts, then add the whole numbers.
Reduce the answer to lowest term whenever possible)
2. Give more examples for the learners to solve by pair using algorithm.
a. Find the sum of 3/10 and 8/10

2|Page
b. 1/8 plus 2 5/8
c. 1 2/3 more than 5 2/3
4. Elaborate A. Teacher provides a tiered activity for each group. Each group is given 2 minutes to answer their specific
(10 minutes) task.
Not ready Just Ready Ready to go beyond
Find the sum using bars. Solve. Find the sum. (Using
In a Gr. VI class, they algorithm.
1. 1 2/8 + 3/8 = were asked about their
favorite juices like lemon, 1. 2 2/5 + 3 4/5 =
2. 2 5/10 + 6/10 = orange and mango. The 2. 3 2/6 + 4 5/6 =
graph shows the result.
Expected answers:
2/8
4/8 Orange juice
Expected answers:

Lemon juice 1.5 6/5 or 1 1/5

2/8
1. Mango juice
2. 2 7/6 or 3 1/6
What part
of the whole class like
lemon and orange juices?
Expected answers:
4/8 + 2/8 = 6/8 or 1 1/4
2.

5.Evaluate A. Draw a diagram to find the sum of the following.

(5 minutes) 1. 2/3 plus 1/3

2. 4/5 plus 3/5

3. 2 3/10 plus 1 5/10

B. Do the following using algorithm.

1.) The sum of 2 5/6 and 3 4/6

2.) 7 5/9 more than 3 7/9

VI. Learning A. Complete each table. Answer in a ½ crosswise sheet of paper.
