4.2 Measurement of Mass

Sample two 250 250 mm test specimens from the mat, and measure their masses to the nearest

0 B
0.01 g. Multiply these masses by 16 and attach the unit "g/m2."

00 31
4.3 Tensile Strength and Elongation Test
Sample four 30 250 mm test specimens each from both the weft and warp directions of the mat.
Marks two points in the center of each specimen, with a distance of 100 mm between them. Set one

01 2
of the specimens on an INSTRON type tensile tester at an clamp interval of 150 mm. Apply tension
to the specimen at a rate of 200 mm/min. Determine the maximum load needed for the specimen to
fail and the corresponding gage length. Convert the tensile strength to (N/cm). Calculate the

3
elongation L using the equation (1).
6@ 9/0
L(%) = - 100 ---------- (1)

where, : Gage length (mm) corresponding to maximum load.

Report the test results separately for the warp and weft directions. Both results should meet the
73 /0
requirement.

4.4 Tear Strength Test

28 14

Sample four 40 150 mm test specimens from the warp and weft directions of the mat. Make a 50
mm-long slit at the center of the shorter side in parallel with the longer side. Clamp the specimen's
two legs with an INSTRON type tensile tester with their surfaces facing opposite directions as shown
0

in Fig. 1. Tear the test specimen at a rate of 200 mm/min. Based on the load diagram obtained (Fig.
2), average the maximal values to determine the tear strength (N). The results for both the warp and
Z1 2

weft directions should be reported. Both results should meet the requirement.

4.5 Tensile Strength and Elongation Test after Aging

Sample a test specimen from the mat according to the procedure given in Section 4.3. Keep the
28 14

specimen in a Geer oven aging tester at 70 2 for 72 hours. Then take the specimen out of the
tester and allow to cool at room temperature. Perform the test in the same manner as in Section 4.3,
and determine the tensile strength (N/cm) and the corresponding elongation (%).
0

4.6 Heat Shrinkage Rate Test

Z1 2

Sample two 220 220 mm square test specimens. Draw two paris of bench marks at an interval of
200 mm on each specimen; one in the warp direction and the other in the weft direction. After
maintaining the specimens at a temperature of 70 2 for 6 hours, cool them to room temperature.
Measure the distance between the two bench marks in each direction, and calculate the heat
shrinkage rate using the equation (2).

Results for both the warp and weft directions should be reported. Both results should meet the
requirement.

4.7 Test for Color Fastness to Dry Crocking

Sample a test specimen being 30 mm wide and 200 mm long. Mount the specimen to the base of
the abrasion tester shown in Fig. 3. Cover the top of the abrasion head with a 50 50 mm piece of
white cotton cloth. Move the abrasion head back and forth over the specimen 100 times under a
load of 1.96 N with a stroke of 100 mm at about 30 cycles per minute. Check the white cotton for any
staining, and determine the degree of staining according to Table 4.

4.8 Taber Abrasion Test

Sample a test specimen 120 mm in diameter from the mat. Make a 6 mm dia. hole at the center of

0 B
the specimen and set it on a Taber abrasion tester specified in TSM0502G. Operate the tester 300
times under a load of 2.45 N, using a CS#10 abrasive wheel(3). Then, check the surface condition of

00 31
the specimen and determine the grade of abrasion according to the criteria specified in Table 4.
Note (3): Grind the abrasive wheel with S-11 paper by turning the wheel 50 revolutions. Repeat this
procedure twice before the test. Replace the paper for every procedure.

01 2
4.9 Cold Resistance Test
Sample 20 100 mm test specimens from the warp and weft directions of the mat. Lift the weight

3
of the cold resistance tester, as shown in Fig. 4, until the distance between its bottom face and anvil
is 50 mm. Maintain the test chamber temperature at -20 2 . Align the specimen's two ends
6@ 9/0
and hold an approximately 5 mm portion of the overlapping ends with the tester's gripper. Fit the
gripper to the tester in such a manner that the folded section of the test specimen is located at the
center of the anvil. Ten minutes after fitting the test specimen to the tester, press the push button to
release the weight (full load: 24.5 N). Immediately lift the weight and remove the gripper. Take out
73 /0
the test specimen and check it for any cracks.
