3. Quality
When tested in accordance with Section 5, thermoplastic elastomer materials shall meet the
requirements given in Table 2.

Note (1): Hardness with no alphabet letter represents A-scale hardness.

4. General Test Conditions

4.1 Test Environment
Unless otherwise specified, tests shall be performed at an ambient temperature of 23 2 and
relative humidity of 50 5%. Unless otherwise specified, test pieces shall be cured for 24 h in a
chamber maintained at the above temperature and humidity.

4.2 Test Sample Preparation

Prepare test samples (hereinafter referred to as "press-formed sheet") by press-forming thermoplastic
elastomer materials into sheets of predetermined thickness. The press-forming conditions, including
temperature, pressure, and time shall be reported.

4.3 Quantity of Test Pieces

The quantity of test pieces(2) shall be at least three.
Note (2): Test pieces shall be cut out from the press-formed sheet to the specified shape.

5. Test Method
5.1 Hardness
Using a Type A durometer or Type D durometer specified in Section 5.4 of JIS K 6253 or ISO 7619-1,
read the scale 10 s after pressurized contact. The temperatures for measurement shall be 23 2 ,
0 2 , and 80 2 . Before measurement, cure the test pieces for 3 h at the respective
atmospheric temperatures. Test pieces shall be 6 mm or more thick. If the test piece is less than 6
mm in thickness, place another test piece on this piece, so that the total thickness reaches or exceeds
6 mm.

5.2 Tensile Strength and Elongation

Set the test piece shown in Fig. 1 on a tensile tester, and stretch it at a rate of 200 mm/min.
Determine the maximum load and elongation at fracture, using the equations (1) and (2). Thickness
of the test piece shall be 3 mm or less.

5.3 Heat Resistance

Store the test pieces specified in Sections 5.1 and 5.2 for 100 h in a Geer oven aging tester or an
equivalent air-circulation type thermostatic oven that has been maintained at 100 2 . Then take
them out of the tester and place them for 1 h or longer to cool to room temperature. Measure their
tensile strength, elongation, and hardness according to the methods specified in Sections 5.1 and 5.2.
For hardness, only the value at 23 2 is required. Using equations (3) and (4) given below,
determine the tensile strength retention rate, elongation retention rate, and hardness change.

5.4 Cold Resistance

Hold with a clamp a test piece with dimensions of 38 6 2 mm. Fasten the clamp to the tester
with a bracket so that the test piece may not dislocate even an impact load is applied. The ram end
shall be 1.57 0.12 mm in radius and shall be capable of rotating at a uniform rate of 1.97 0.15
m/s.
The ram shall hit the test piece at a point 6.35 0.25 mm away from the test piece fixing end (Fig. 2).
As the heat transmission medium, use a liquid that will not affect the test piece (e.g., ethanol). Fill
the medium into the tester in advance. Adding dry ice, adjust the temperature to the specified value.
Immerse the clamp/test piece assembly in the medium for 2.5 0.5 min and apply an impact load.
Determine the lowest temperature at which none of the three test pieces fractures. The term
"fracture" means a condition that a test piece breaks into two or more separate pieces. Development
of fissure or cracking is not deemed as "fracture."

5.5 Paint Film Contamination Resistance

Using a nickel chrome wire or other proper binding, attach a 30 30 2 mm test piece firmly to a
plate that has been painted (paint: white solid or light mica) under the same conditions as actual
vehicles, so that the test piece may not fall. Set the test piece assembly on a sunshine
weatherometer conforming to ASTM G152, and expose it to a black panel temperature of 63 3
for 400 h with ion exchange water kept sprayed. Then remove the test piece from the painted plate
and inspect contaminated condition of the painted surface.

5.6 Liquid Resistance

For the test liquids, prepare gasoline, kerosene, wax remover (e.g., ST-7 made by Yushiro Chemical),
and window washer liquid. Depending on the situation, different test liquids may be specified. After
soaking such soft cloth as gauze in test liquid that has been maintained at approximately 20 , lightly
wipe two to three times the test piece measuring 30 30 2 mm. After storing it for 2 h in the
normal condition, remove the test liquid with gauze or other soft dry cloth, and inspect its external
appearance.

5.7 Heating Loss

After measuring the mass of test pieces (30 30 2 mm) accurately, store them for 100 h in a
Geer aging tester or equivalent air-circulation type tester maintained at 100 2 . Then remove
them from the tester to cool for 1 h in a room. Measure the mass of the test pieces again and
calculate their heating loss from equation (5). Take the maximum value of the values for three test
piece as the heating loss.

5.8 Weather resistance

5.8.1 Accelerated Weather resistance
Set a test piece of proper size on a sunshine weatherometer conforming to ASTM G152, and expose
it to a black panel temperature of 83 3 for 2000 h. Spraying ion exchange water is not
necessarily required for this test. Take the test piece out of the tester, and inspect its appearance
visually and under a microscope of 50 magnification.

5.8.2 Outdoor Exposure

Fasten test pieces to an exposure mount installed facing south and tilted upward with respect to a
horizontal plane at the same angle as the latitude of the test site. The test duration and test site shall
conform to Table 3. After the test, inspect the external appearances of the test pieces visually and
under a microscope of 50 magnification.
When required, clean the test piece surfaces with water or non-compound wax to facilitate the
inspection.

Item Description
Test duration 1 or 3 years(3)
Test site Okinawa or Arizona(3)

Note (3): The details shall be discussed between parties concerned.

5.9 Scratch Susceptibility

Prepare a test solution by mixing 10 g of seven types of test dusts into 50 mL of water. Spray this
solution evenly over the sample plate of a car washing test apparatus (paint film abrasion resistance
evaluation test apparatus(4)). With water supplied, operate the test apparatus for 1 min to let the dust
attach to the brush. To compare with a test sample of 50 100 mm, set a soft polyvinyl chloride
sheet(5) of the same size on the sample table and scatter 0.1 g of foundry sand (particle size: 150 -
210 m) uniformly over the test samples. With water supplied, operate the test apparatus for 1 min.
After completion of the operation, remove the test samples and compare the scratched conditions on
the sample surfaces with the reference sheet made of soft polyvinyl chloride material.
Notes:
(4) Determine detailed requirements through discussion among parties concerned.
(5) For the reference sheet of soft poly vinyl chloride material, use a press-formed sheet with
hardness of 70 to 90 and glossiness of 30 to 80.
