ACI Coefficient

The document discusses the ACI-code coefficient method for approximating moments and shears in continuous beams and one-way slabs. It provides the equations for calculating positive moments at end and interior spans as well as negative moments at support faces. An example is also included showing the application of these equations to calculate moments at two points on a slab.

1- ACI-code coefficient method (Approximate method)

The following approximate moments and shears shall be permitted for design of
continuous beams and one-way slabs (slabs reinforced to resist flexural stresses
in only one direction), provided (a) through (e) are satisfied:
(a) There are two or more spans;
(b) Spans are approximately equal, with the larger of two adjacent spans not
greater than the shorter by more than 20 percent;
(c) Loads are uniformly distributed;
(d) Un-factored live load, does not exceed three times un-factored dead load,
(e) Members are prismatic.

Positive moment
End spans: Discontinuous end unrestrained............. (wu ln2)/11
Discontinuous end integral with support.... (wu ln2)/14
Interior spans: ............................................ (wu ln2)/16
Negative moments at exterior face of first interior support:
Two spans................................................. (wu ln2)/9
More than two spans.............................. (wu ln2)/10
Negative moment at other faces of interior supports.............. (wu ln2)/11
Negative moment at face of all supports for: Slabs with spans not exceeding 3 m; and
beams where ratio of sum of column stiffness to beam stiffness exceeds 8 at each end
of the span.................. (wu ln2)/12
Negative moment at interior face of exterior support for members built
integrally with supports:
Where support is spandrel beam.............. (wu ln2)/24
Where support is a column....................... (wu ln2)/16
Shear in end members at face of first interior support........ (1.15wu ln) /2
Shear at face of all other supports.................. (wu ln) /2

Ln = clear span for positive moment or shear, and average of adjacent clear
spans for negative moment.
Wu = factored load per unit length of beam or per unit area of slab.

Example No 1: For the given slab if Wu = 17 KN/m2, width of beams
equal 0.25 m and all columns 0.25×0.25 m. compute the moment at
point B and C in vertical direction only.

Solution:
Panal 1: la=3.6 m, lb=15 m
𝑙𝑎 3.6
= = 0.24 < 0.5 ∴ 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑏
𝑙𝑏 15
Firstly, check if can use ACI-Code coefficient method.

3.6 − 3.2
× 100% = 11.11% < 20%
3.6
∴ Ok we can use ACI-Code coefficient method.
From figure (1-2) in page 8:

𝑙𝑎 (𝑎𝑣𝑎.) : Clear span for positive moment or shear and average of adjacent
clear spans for negative moment. (Review page 8)
3.6 + 3.2
𝑙𝑎 (𝑎𝑣𝑎.) = = 3.4 𝑚

17 × 3.42
𝑀𝐶 = = 17.865 𝑘𝑁. 𝑚/𝑚
