Components:
••I
A large part of our ability to move quickly into a tower con-
struction project and complete it in the shortest possible time,
revolves around our fully stocked warehouse of raw materials
and basic tower components. These include guys, guy hard-
ware, bolts, obstruction lighting materials, grounding materi-
als, transmission lines, transmission line hardware, antenn·a
clamps, and numerous miscellaneous parts and supplies.
I
L & R regional offices maintain a full stock of basic tower
components.
Installation:
I
At L & R, we believe that the installation is as important as
the engineering and manufacturing function. We are equipped
to erect light, medium and heavy towers (both guyed and self-
supporting), and to install foundations, passive reflectors,
I
antennas and transmission lines.
Experienced rigging crews, available through our regional
offices, provide a full range of field services for assignments
I
anywhere in Canada or abroad.
Expert tower inspection and maintenance, and on the job
quality control by knowledgeable supervisors round out the
services available to you through Canada's leading communi-
cations tower manufacturer.

each customer's individual requirements at an economical price.
•
II The legs, diagonals and horizontals are solid rounds, shop welded to
form a rigid triangular section. Special jigs are employed to ensure
uniformity of the section.
• One face has extra horizontals and a continuous bar added to facilitate
I •
climbing and for the support of cables and safety rail if required.
A pipe leg splice is fitted on the inside of the leg to provide a clean out-
side surface, this facilitates the mounting of cables directly to the legs.
• Two styles of base sections are available, a tapered base section and
I •
a star base section, which can be used depending on the tower
application.
Guy lugs and struts are shop welded at the required levels.
D Mounts for light antennas are easily U-bolted to the sections at the
I •
desired positions.
Mounts for larger antennas are shop welded to the section at the
required locations.
D Torsion resistors are employed as required at certain guy levels to resist
I the twisting effect of antennas and maintain their directional bearing.
D This series of tower is quickly erected by experienced tower crews.

POST ERECTION INSPECTION
I For major tower installations, an inspection, retensioning of guys and plumbing of the tower is recommended about
one year after installation. This inspection is very often included in the original tower specification as part of the supp-
ly and installation contract. New guy cables will have a certain amount of constructional stretch which will usually oc-
I cur during the first year of operation. Therefore, the main purpose of this inspection is to return the guys to the
originally specified tension. For minor tower installations, the start of a regular inspection and maintenance program
should suffice.
I FREQUENCY OF INSPECTIONS
For major and critical tower installations, it is recommended that a complete tower inspection, replumbing and reten-
I sioning be made every three years in normal conditions and more frequently if in a hazardous location. For other
tower installations, a 5 year period between major inspections will be sufficient. Minor inspections should be made
more frequently. This can be combined with the relamping of the tower. Station personnel should also be instructed
to periodically visually check the tower, anchorages and transmission line supports.
I If a tower installation has been subjected to an extreme wind and/or ice loading, it should be checked out for any
damage and quite possibly a retensioning of the guys. With the recent advent of snowmobiles, the guy cables of
•I
towers in remote areas can be subject to damage from these vehicles hitting the cables. Similarly, if there is a
roadway or if vehicles have been operating in or near the anchors, periodical checks should be made to ensure that
no accidents have occurred.
MAJOR INSPECTIONS
A major tower inspection should include the following items:
1. A check of the plumbness of the shaft and tensions in the guys and replumbing and tensioning if necessary.
I 8. A full report of the inspection, including a complete description of any items which require major repair work.
I In order for a guyed mast to function at its maximum capabilities, the shaft must be straight and plumb and the guys
properly tensioned within accepted tolerances. The two are usually checked and adjusted at the same time. The
plumbness of the shaft is checked with a transit from two directions. Any deviations at the guy levels are noted and
I corrected by adjusting guy tensions. Any deflections in the shaft between guy levels should also be noted.
Guy tensions can be checked and adjusted by several methods, depending on the guy sizes and equipment
available. The time-pulse method is the most widely used method at the present time. Some adjustment in the
I
,
method is required for insulated guys.
It is possible that the connection bolts may loosen due to vibration during their lifetime and must be periodically
checked, either visually or by wrench. Tower members may also be damaged by falling ice, installation of new equip-
ment or by other means.
EQUIPMENT
A check of the equipment attachments is usually made and any loose connections secured. A visual check of the
physical condition is also made and noted in the report. m
t!J
FOUNDATIONS
The earth around the foundations must be checked for settlement of the backfill and any evidence of movement
noted. Concrete must be checked for cracks and deterioration .
. Rock anchors must be checked for cracks and any signs of movement.
Repair to foundations usually constitute a major operation and should only be undertaken after careful consideration
of all the factors involved.
OBSTRUCTION MARKINGS
The maintenance of the lighting and painting systems for compliance with government requirements for marking
obstructions is a major item in any tower maintenance program.
The relamping of the tower is a continual program and must be carried out at regular intervals as required. Past ex-
perience has indicated that the conduit and junction boxes used for the lighting system may be the first items to
deteriorate and therefore may require regular cleaning and painting with a zinc rich paint. Jacketed Corflex or similar
electrical cables do not have this problem.
Since most towers are hot dipped galvanized after fabrication, painting is not required as a protection for the steel
structure. Therefore, the painting is only to provide a visual obstruction marking and only needs to be replaced when
the pattern space ceases to be effective. The period between painting jobs will vary considerably depending on the
location of the tower and quality of the paint job. The range is probably 3 to 10 years. If painting is used as protection
for the tower then it must be regularly checked and repainted at the first sign of any deterioration.
MINOR INSPECTIONS
This would consist of a visual check on the condition of the foundations, the tower and its equipment, including
plumbness of the shaft and tension of the guys. No repair work or retensioning would be performed. The report
would be verbal or in letter form outlining problem areas.
