your learning style, e.g. sources with illustrations, charts, tables, or videos.
If you prefer recording the lecture and listening again to taking notes, or you memorize something

Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find
the best method. Is it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country?
The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the
language all the time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language
wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other
people. In Italy, it is always possible, in the class, to speak Italian if you want to and the learning
is slower.
On the other hand, there are also advantages to staying at home to study. You don't have
to make big changes to your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but
it is never possible to achieve the results of living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I
think you can learn in a more concentrated way than being in Britain without going to a school.
So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice
is to spend some time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy
is the only viable option. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximise your
opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside
the class.
Question 26. What is the article about?
A. How many people learn English.
B. The best way to learn English.
C. English schools in England and America.
D. English is studied globally
Question 27. What is one of the advantages of going to the UK to learn English?
A. There are no Italians in Britain.
B. You will have to speak English and not your language.
C. The language schools are better.
D. You will be surrounded completely by many languages.
Question 28. What is one of the advantages of staying in your country to learn English?
A. The teachers aren't very good in Britain.
B. You have to work too hard in Britain.
C. Your life can continue more or less as it was before.
D. You have a good teacher in your country.
Question 29. People who don't have a lot of time and money should...

A POLLUTED WORLD
The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways are
water, land and air pollution.
Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by human activities. It can be harmful
to organisms and plants which live in the water. Water pollution occurs when wastes are discharged
from waste water treatment plants. Other known causes are factory wastes or leaking underground
tanks. These can be chemical substances that are toxic. The polluted water can cause cholera and
typhoid fever. Water pollution has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.
Land pollution is the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. It is often caused by human
activities such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals and wrong use of land for
planting. All these will affect our health in the long run. They will lead to all kinds of diseases
such as cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. Land pollution also brings about natural
disasters such as flash floods and landslides.
Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other dangerous
materials are released into the air. This happens through the release of carbon monoxide gas from
exhaust pipes of motor vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides are released from the burning
of coal and oil. High air pollution levels can cause damage to the environment. It also brings
discomfort to humans and other living organisms. In the long term, air pollution can cause serious
breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease.

Today, more and more women are actively participating in social activities both in urban
and rural areas. Specifically, they have shined brightly in even many fields commonly regarded as
the man's areas such as business, scientific research and social management. In some areas, women
even show more overwhelming power than men. The image of contemporary Vietnamese women
with creativeness, dynamism, success has become popular in Vietnam's society. The fact reveals
that the gender gap has been remarkably narrowed and women enjoy many more opportunities to
pursue their social careers and obtain success, contributing to national socio-economic
development. According to Ms, Le Thi Quy, Director of the Gender/and Development Research
Centre under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi National University, gender
equity in Vietnam has reached a high level over the past decade. The rate of Vietnamese women
becoming National Assembly members from the 9th term to the 11th term increased 8.7%, bringing
the proportion of Vietnamese women in authority to 27.3%, the highest rate in Southeast Asia.
There is no big gap in the level of literacy and schooling between men and women. Women account
for about 37% of university and college graduates, 19.9% of doctoral degree holders and 6.7% of
professors and associate professors.
The legitimate rights of women and children are ensured more than ever before with more
complete legal documents including laws, conventions and national action plans, among which the
laws on "gender equity" mark a turning-point in the empowerment of women.
Mass media also highlights the continued success of women in every field and honors their
great importance in modern society, helping to do away with outdated perceptions about traditional
women's duties. Many projects on reproductive health care, children protection, and family income
improvement jointly conducted by various mass organizations, state agencies and non-
governmental organizations have created favorable conditions for women to become involved.

PART 1:
Hello everybody. This Saturday we're all going on a trip to an ancient village just outside the city
and I'd just like to give you some information about the trip. We're leaving from here at 8.30 in
the morning. It's an 8-hour trip so we'll probably be back at 4.30 p.m. We're going to visit three
of the most famous attractions in the village. The first one is a large ancient house. It was built
600 years ago and its architecture is very impressive. After that we're going to have lunch with a
local family. The family is going to prepare the most delicious locally made food for us and I'm
sure we'll enjoy it. I think we'll stay there about 45 minutes. Then we're going to walk to the third
attraction - the village pagoda. It's one of the oldest and biggest pagodas in the country and is
surrounded by different types of trees. We can walk around the pagoda and learn about its
interesting history. The pagoda is very beautiful so you can take some excellent photographs
there. So don't forget to bring your camera with you. And remember: Don't drop litter or pick
flowers on the roadside while you are visiting the places.
PART 2:
Lan: It's great to have another week full of activities and trips at the camp.
Mark: Oh, yeah, I like the trip to the kindergarten most. The kids were adorable and the teachers
were great. I think I'll be kindergarten teacher.
Lan: That's fantastic. My cousin works at a kindergarten and the children love being in his class.
By the way, what do you want to be in the future, Linda?

17
Linda: Oh, I've always wanted to be a surgeon, so I'll go to medical school. What about you.
Lan?
Lan: Me? My dream is to become an airline pilot. That's why I'm focusing on maths and
physics, and exercising more to improve my fitness.
Linda: Cool! I hope your dream will come true. In some countries girls may not be allowed to
be pilots.
Lan: That's true, Linda. We're lucky to live in a country where boys and girls are encouraged to
do the jobs they want.
Mark: Couldn't agree more. Girls mustn't be kept home in today's world. Boys and girls should
be treated equally and given the same job opportunities.

While many sites in Vietnam are hardly known to tourists, some famers in the Mekong delta have
attracted hundreds of foreign visitors to their ecological gardens.

Ba Đức’s old house in Tiền Giang Province is one example. Before 2000, no visitors spent more
than 15 minutes at his house, and very few tourists returned for a second visit. Then Ba Đức had
an idea. He thought if tourists had more activities to do while visiting his house, they would stay
longer. He then turned his 2.5-hectare farm into an ecological garden, with a fish pond where
tourists can go fishing. His wife started cooking home-made meals for the visitors and even
teaching them how to cook local specialities. At present, Ba Đức welcomes around 100 visitors a
day.
Similarly, Tư Bình of Vĩnh Long province turned his 2.1-hectare fish pond into an ecotourism
destination in 2005. Tourists can now catch fish in the pond, but then they have to release the small
ones back into the pond. He also kept several exotic birds and raised some African ostriches. Bird
watching and ostrich riding became very popular activities for tourists to enjoy on his farm. Tư
Bình now runs a very successful ecotourism business with around 300 visitors every day.

Task 1: There are four questions in this part. For each question, choose the correct answer
A, B, or C. You will listen to the recording twice.
Todd: Karen, can you talk about some of the places you've been to?
Karen: Yes. First of all, I spent about three months in Australia. I suppose the most amazing
place I visited was Uluru. The landscape there was just incredible.
Todd: Uluru? That’s great!
Karen: I've also been to South America. I spent a year in Peru, and while I was there I went to
Machu Picchu. It is an ancient ruin of an old Inca town. Probably about seven hundred years old,
I think.
Todd: Uhuh! That's interesting. Any other places?
Karen: I spent quite a lot of time in Spain, and the most interesting place there was the Alhambra
in Granada. It's an amazing old town with Muslim palaces.
Todd: Alhambra? Very cool. So, you've seen something in Australia, in South America, in
Europe, how about Asia?
Karen: Asia. I've been to Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
Todd: And what is your favourite place in Asia?

18
Karen: Well, probably Bangkok. Oh, no, I think I like Hokkaido the most.
Task 2: There are six questions in this part. For each question, decide whether the
statement is True or False. You will listen to the recording twice.
I’ve learned several foreign languages as an adult. I was able to learn French to make
conversations fluently in 17 days using the following techniques.
I set up a routine where I did the same things every day.
In the morning, I woke up and wrote out the regular and irregular verb tables for 1.5-2 hours.
I managed to get through an entire pad of paper in two weeks. I still believe that writing things
out by hand is the best way to memorise things.
I would run for 45 to 60 minutes in the early afternoon in the French countryside listening to
catchy French music. Music is a great way to learn the intonation of a language and train your
facial muscles as you sing along.
In the afternoon, I read “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in French. Reading children’s books
is a great way to learn new languages.
I spent at least an hour a day writing basic essays about myself which I had my French friend
check for errors.
Another good tip is to learn the filler words. These are the words and phrases people say all the
time between sentences but have no real meanings like alors, en fait, etc. These allow you to buy
time in a conversation and increase your confidence.
After 17 days I left the small town and went to Paris. I met a girl in a coffee shop and we started
talking. After a few minutes, she asked how long I had lived in France. When I told her I had
been learning French for 17 days, she swore that I had lived in France for at least a year.
Hopefully there are some useful tips you can use in your learning. Let me know and bonne
chance!

PART 2 (From question 6 to 10)
Happy International Women’s Day! It’s Sophia again and, of course, this video is for the British
Council’s LearnEnglish Teens website and their YouTube channel. As it is International Women’s
Day, I thought as well as celebrating all the amazing women in our lives, it would be really great
to raise some awareness about women’s equality, so I’m going to be speaking to you guys today
about ‘pink tax’, otherwise known as gender tax. Q1
What is gender tax? Gender tax is basically the idea that women have to pay more for certain
products because they're marketed at women and not men.
Now you might be thinking, ‘How is this possible?’ Surely if women across the globe realised that
they were being charged more than men, they would be angry and they wouldn’t buy the products
and they would realise how unfair this is? Unfortunately, no! Gender tax has sneaked into many
everyday products that women and men aren’t even aware of! Q2 We might be familiar with
the classic examples of women’s deodorants or razors costing more than men’s, but have you ever
thought about something as simple as a plain T-shirt or a yoghurt?
A report by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs found on average that products
geared towards women cost more than similar products geared towards men 42 per cent of the
time. But it doesn’t just stop there. Even children are affected by the gender tax. Q3 In the same
report, they found that these two similar scooters from the same company – one was targeted at
girls and one was targeted at boys – and the one that was targeted at girls cost £16 more than that
one targeted at boys. So even girls and boys, men and women, people of all ages are affected by
the pink tax Q4 or the gender tax.
So, what can we take from all of this? Well, I think that the very first important step is to be aware
of gender tax; to be aware of the products we’re buying and to question whether this product is
more expensive because it’s for a woman or less expensive because it’s for a man. You can help
to raise awareness by sharing this video with all your family and friends. Leave me a comment
below and let me know if you’ve realised any products in your local supermarket that might
be influenced by gender tax, Q5 and, of course, let me know how you’re celebrating International
Women’s Day. I hope you’re having a lovely day and, once again, happy International Women’s
Day. I’ll see you in my next one! Byeeeeee!

Tour guide: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen and welcome to this fantastic tour of London
by bus. My name’s Greg and I’m your guide this afternoon on our tour of London. As you can
see, we’re on an open-top bus, so you can see all the attractions from your seat and you don’t
need to walk anywhere. And please don’t worry about the rain, I’m sure it’ll stop soon. A-a-and
please ask any questions at any time.
Tourist 1: I have a question.
Tour guide: Yes?
Tourist 1: Do you have extra umbrellas? I mean, if it rains a lot.
Tour guide: Err, no, we don’t have any extra umbrellas, but don’t worry, I’m sure the rain will
stop soon. Right, OK, so where are we going on our wonderful tour? Well, the tour takes two
hours and we are going to visit all the famous sites. First we’ll see Madame Tussauds, the
museum with wax models of famous people and celebrities, then we’ll drive along the most
famous shopping street in the world, Oxford Street. After that we’ll see the famous clock Big

20
Ben and The Houses of Parliament. As we drive along the river you’ll see the popular attraction,
the London Eye, from which you can see the whole city on a sunny day. Then we’ll see Tower
Bridge and the famous Tower of London before arriving at Buckingham Palace, just in time for a
cup of tea with the Queen.
Tourist 2: Is that included in the tour? A cup of tea with the Queen?
Tour guide: Err, well, no, not exactly, but there’s a lovely café near the palace where you can
get a cup of tea. (Sound of a storm right overhead, loud thunder and very heavy downpour)
Tourist 1: I have another question.
Tour guide: Yes?
Tourist 1: Can we have our money back? We’re getting off the bus.
Tour guide: Err, well, you see ... Quick! Run! Everyone off the bus! ...
PART 2: For questions 6-10, listen a talk about a village under danger and decide whether
the following statements are True (T) or False (F). You will hear the conversation twice.
A village of about 650 people in Alaska wants to move away to a new location. The village, called
Shishmaref, is on a small island , and the island is getting smaller and smaller. The island is getting
smaller because the sea temperature is getting warmer and ice is melting . Every year, the sea is
closer to the houses in Shishmaref, and the people there are afraid that their houses will soon fall
into the water. In fact, some people say that the island will be gone in only 20 years. Shishmaref
is not special, however. There are many other islands in the world that may disappear under the
water because of rising sea levels . For example, the island nation of Kiribati wants to buy land in
another country (Fiji) so that the 100,000 Kiribati people will have a place to live when their island
is under water. Most of the people of Shishmaref want to leave, but when can they leave? It will
cost millions of dollars to move the village to a new, safer location , but, unfortunately, Shishmaref
is a poor village with not much money.

Hello, and thank you for inviting me to talk about gender equality. Well, first, let’s begin
with equality in wages.
Wage discrimination happens when workers are equally qualified and perform the same
work, but some workers are paid more than others. Very often, wage discrimination affects
women negatively.
On average, women work more than men, but they earn much less. I can give you some
information.
Women perform sixty-six per cent of the world’s work, produce fifty per cent of the food, but
earn ten per cent of the income and own one per cent of the property.
In families where both parents work, for example, men and women spend about equal
amounts of time working, but women still have to spend more time on housework.
So, how are governments addressing the problem of inequality in wages? As far as I
know, many countries now allow and encourage women to join the army, the police forces and
the fire services. On the other hand, more and more men are now working in jobs like nursing,
cleaning and childcare …
