IV. PROCEDURES PRELIMINARIES
 The teacher will start with the following prayer
 Gree琀椀ngs and energizer
 A昀琀er the a琀琀endance checking, the teacher will set mood by gree琀椀ng
the students every group and start with a昀케rma琀椀on by saying “How
are you today class?”
 A昀琀er se琀ng the mood, the teacher will also set the standard to ensure
smooth conduct of the classroom ac琀椀vi琀椀es.
 Arrange the chairs accordingly.
 Rules during this Lesson
V. ENGAGE Look at the di昀昀erent vegetables and fruits, shown in the picture. Can you
name them? Suppose you slice up the real vegetables and fruits into pieces.
Place them in a bowl and mixed together. What we call the sliced vegetables
and fruits which are mixed together? You might call it a salad. Scien琀椀st would
probably call it a mixture.

VI. EXPLORE Ac琀椀vity 1: Forming Mixtures

What you need:

 10 Marbles, 10 Paper Clips, 10 Bu琀琀ons
 2 Small Plas琀椀c Jars Labeled A and B with lids
 Sugar
 Saw Dust
 Spoon

Let's explore the ac琀椀vity below:

1. Place equal number of marbles, paper clips, and bu琀琀ons in jar A and jar B.

lOMoARcPSD|30678815

And a spoonful of sugar and a spoonful of saw dust only in jar B.

2. Cover each jar and shake to mix the contents. Observe each jar. What was
formed? How do you compare the appearance of materials mixed in jar A jar
B? Within your group, discuss what mixture is and how mixtures are formed.
3. Complete the table below.

Jar Items Mixed Together How the di昀昀erent

materials look like a昀琀er
they were mixed?
A Marble, paper clips, bu琀琀ons

B Marble, paper clips, bu琀琀ons,

sugar, saw dust

VII. EXPLAIN A mixture is made up of two or more substances or materials that are put
together by physical means. When marbles, paper clips, bu琀琀ons, sugar and
saw dust are combined together they form mixtures. In forming mixtures, no
new substances and or materials are formed because mixing materials or
substances together does not change the physical proper琀椀es of substances
or materials. All phases of ma琀琀er can be physically combined to form
mixtures. One or more phases of ma琀琀er are combined in a mixture and one
or more phases of ma琀琀er can be observed in mixtures.

Mixture Substances Phases Number of

debris gas)

Three basic characteris琀椀cs of mixtures are as follows:

1. The composi琀椀on of the mixture is variable. For example, the components

of the mixture of marbles, paper clips and bu琀琀ons can di昀昀er or vary.

2. The components retain their original characteris琀椀cs. Marbles, paper clips,

bu琀琀ons, sugar and saw dust do not lose their appearance, texture, color and
shape a昀琀er they are mixed together.

3. The components are easily separated by physical methods. Since no

chemical reac琀椀on has taken place when mixing marbles, paper clips, and
bu琀琀ons, as well as mixing with saw dust, it is possible for these materials to
be separated. Can you suggest ways on how to separate these materials
from the mixture?

VII. ELABORATE Let's 昀椀nd out more about mixtures by doing the ac琀椀vity below:

Ac琀椀vity 2. More on Mixtures

What you need:

Table salt, brown sugar, pebbles, white sand, iron 昀椀lings, starch, water, 5
glasses, s琀椀rrer, table spoon, white paper

What to Do:

1. In a clean empty glass, place one teaspoon sugar and one teaspoon
pebbles. Shake them together. Can you s琀椀ll dis琀椀nguish the sugar from the
pebbles?

2. In another glass, put one gram of iron 昀椀lings and one gram of white sand.
Shake them together. Look at your mixture. Can you dis琀椀nguish the sand
from the iron 昀椀lings?

3. Half-昀椀ll a glass with water. Add one teaspoon of salt. S琀椀r. Look very inside
the glass. Can you s琀椀ll see the salt? What do you think happened?

4. In another glass, combine water and starch. Cover and shake them
together. Describe what was formed inside the glass

5. Mix equal amount of water and cooking oil in another glass.

6. Set aside your mixtures. You will need them in the next ac琀椀vity for Mod 2.
Lesson 4.

What you have found out?

1. Which combina琀椀on made a solid mixture? Which mixture is a liquid

mixture?

_______________________________________________________

2. In which mixture can you dis琀椀nguish the components? In which

mixture can you not dis琀椀nguish the components?

_______________________________________________________

Mixtures can be classi昀椀ed as homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Homogeneous mixtures, or well-mixed mixtures, are those that appear

single- phased. The par琀椀cle size of the components is too small to be seen by
the unaided eye and the mixture appears transparent or clear.

Heterogeneous mixtures or unevenly-mixed mixtures are those where the

par琀椀cles of one or more components can s琀椀ll be di昀昀eren琀椀ated from the rest
of the mixture by the unaided eye. Two or more phases of ma琀琀er can be
observed. Can you iden琀椀fy which mixture in the ac琀椀vity above is
heterogeneous?
