MOCKINGJAY
Suzanne Collins
"Mockingjay" is the third and last book of the trilogy of The Hunger Games. The
author of this book is Suzanne Collins, she is known for her capacity of writing and creating
amazing characters for her books. Mockingjay was published on August 24th 2010 and the
copyright date is September 20th 2010 , also it is still popular nowadays because of the
intriguing theme and also because there is a trilogy of movies based on the three books.
In "Mockingjay", Katniss is the icon of a rebellion against the Capitol. She lives in
District 13, once thought to be destroyed. Peeta, her co-tribute, has been trapped by the
Capitol, which distresses her. The war escalates with Katniss and her allies liberating
districts. Katniss is in a love triangle with Peeta and her best friend, Gale. This adds to the
tension. The book culminates with the invasion of the Capitol. During the final battle,
Katniss's sister, Prim, is killed. Katniss kills President Coin instead of President Snow,
suspecting that Coin had something to do with Prim's death. At the end ,the main characters,
Katniss and Peeta, return to District 12 and begin to rebuild their lives. Finally the book ends
with an epilogue where Katniss and Peeta live a quiet life with their two children.
As I said before Katniss Everdeen is the symbol of the rebellion against the Capitol.
In this book she is 17 years old but in the last part, the epilogue, she is 35 years old. She is
the main character of all the trilogy and is also known as “the girl in flames”. Katniss is very
bold, independent and has great survival instincts that helped her to stay Alive. Her husband,
Peeta Mellark, who had the same age as Katniss, is very in love with her and is capable of
doing everything to keep both of them alive. He has a good sense of humor and also he is
very nice with the people around him.
This book takes place in District 13. This place was supposed to be destroyed but it's
actually operating underground. Some parts of the book take place at the capitol and at the
end of the story they are in District 12, a place that is being reconstructed after the damages
of the war. Suzzane Collins did not specify the years that this book takes place but we do
know that it's in a post apocalyptic future.
Personally, I don't have a favorite part of the book but I do like the parts where the
characters say something that has a real connection with the real world and life. For example:
“Some walks you have to take alone”(Collins, Mockingjay), it means that sometimes you
don't have to follow the things that other people do, you can create your own rules instead of
having someone do it for you. Another one could be “As long as you can find yourself, you'll
never starve”(Collins, Mockingjay), this means that as long as you discover your skills and
strengths you can take care of yourself all alone.
There are a lot of themes that you can take out of this book but the main theme is
sacrifice. Some characters in the book make some big sacrifices for the greater god or in the
hope of having a better future. The most relevant example of this theme in the book is that the
main character, Katniss, sacrifices herself by becoming the symbol of rebellion so that way
she could inspire others but also knowing that that would make her a target.
Mockingjay is the last book of the trilogy of The Hunger Games, so I would
recommend reading them in order so that you could understand the development of the story
in chronological order. I really liked that the outcome of the book was totally unexpected. It's
also interesting the change of Katniss' attitude compared to the other two books. I would say
that this book is a 4 out of 5 because I think that it could have had a better ending. Although I
think that the book it's very entertaining and intriguing, I would recommend it to people that
like that type of book that you cannot guess or at least have an idea of what the end could be
so that way it generates a lot of curiosity and suspense.
The design of the shirt that I made is the cover of the book that illustrates the bird that
is the symbol of the Mockingjay. I decided to draw that because it also means the fact that
Katniss became the Mockingjay in a very public way so she could inspire her people.
