Course description
The banking sector and services they offer are becoming globalized and most of financial service
providers are growing quickly. A possible significant career opportunity is represented in the
sector. The banking industry plays an important role in our lives and careers.
The purpose of this course is to provide students with understanding of banking issues, including
management and professional operations.
The course will cover different aspects of this interesting part of the financial world, including
introduction of organization and structure of the financial services industry as a whole and the
banking sector particularly; management of deposit and non-deposit items; lending policies, and
lending to business and individuals.

Readings
The key recommended textbook is Peter S. Rose and Sylvia C. Hudgins (2013), Bank
Management and Financial Services, McGraw-Hill Irwin Press, Ninth Edition.
Other books relating to commercial banking issues are the optional readings. You are also advised
to read the lecture notes prior to the class. In addition, various sources of information such as
newspapers, articles, other relevant textbooks, and websites are highly recommended. Special note
should be taken to the website of State Bank of Vietnam for legal documentation on commercial
bank management and supervisions (www.sbv.gov.vn).

Presentation time: Total 60 minutes

 In each section, two groups are directly involved, including one presentation group and one
defence group.
 Presentation is limited to 30 mins. Defence group have to be mainly responsible for
commenting and questioning.
 Q&A is limited to 20 mins.
 Comments and discussion from the instructor: 10 mins.

Requirements

 A Draft PowerPoint Presentation should be sent to lecturers at least 05 days prior to the
presentation day. Final presentation should be sent to lecturers’ and class e-mail at least 02
days before the presentation day.
 Presentation should consist of
(1) News brief (domestic and international banking news), and
(2) Main topic presentation
 The whole presenting and defending group is to attend class well on time.
 The final text document and PPT completed after the presentation with improvements (if
any) should be sent to e-mails of the class and the lecturer by email in a week from the
presentation to be checked by Turnitin.

Final grade is calculated by the below structure:

Individual works 10% Students should attend at least 75% of class hours. Extra
credit will be given for frequent attendance. However,
activeness in class discussion is the most important.
Group works 20% Students will be grouped for weekly presentation. One group
is the presenter, while the other group acts as the defender.
The presenting group should submit a text document,
which will be checked by turnitin, that articulates the
topic assigned to them.
Mid-term exam 20% This is a 60 min open-book exam.
Final exam 50% This is a 90 min close-book exam.
